Memory Card Error(s) after GH1 use

After 2 weeks of playing around with the camera, I finally take it to my kids birthday party - power it up - and get a memory card error. The night before I was recording with no problems as I have over the course of 2 weeks.

So here I am pretty pissed and frustrated. My wife remembers the Canon Elph we have also uses an SDHC memory card so I stick that card into the GH1 - luckily she carries the Elph in her bag.

I only had room for 30 min of video instead of the 2 hrs I planned for.. ok, I'll take it..

So I record and snap photos for the next few hours. Come home that eve and stick the card into my reader ... all looks well so far. I start a drag and drop and let it go.

I come back 10 min later to some errors on screen. I look at the HD and see nothing copied - I look at the SD card and it cant read it properly.

2 Different cards - both with memory card errors and so far I'm 0 for 5 with recovery software luck. Nothing can be found from either card and I am (prob not as much as the wife) pretty ticked.

Never lost digital photos out of the thousands I've shot over the years and this really frustrates me.

Any ideas? Anyone have this happen to them? Would you think the camera is making them corrupt somehow? I'm lost at this point... Thought it was the mem card first, but it happened on 2 diff cards - one new (adata), one older (transcend). Now I'm geared towards shipping the cam back for exchange.. I dunno.

    Thanks..

i'ts hard to tell. did you format the card in camera? there's been problems with transcend in the past. but haven't heard much about adata. you're gonna get " you get what you paid for" so get ready for that.

The transcend has been used in my canon for a couple years now and never an issue. Its a class 6 btw.

The adata was a new card - also class 6.

The adata was formatted in the gh1. The transcend was just inserted straight from the canon into the gh1 and was working fine without complaining.

I'm sort of concerned the camera might be at fault here. My level of trust with the gh1 is rocky right about now.

Think you might have two separate issues at play here.

First, the Adata card could be faulty.

Second, sounds like you took the Transcend card from the Canon to the GH1 without formatting the card once inserted into the GH1. That's asking for trouble.

I might be s.o.l. here.. The only thing I think I'll try is shipping the cards to a recovery service to see if they can do anything.

Im open to any other suggestions... thx

as hard as may sound, cut your losses and get that card Adata card replaced or swapped for another brand. Might sound stupid but did you accidentally lock the card before inserting?

Not formatting the canon card didn't help. so you can see the video files on the card but you just can't drag it over?

I've the same kind of problem with Transcend 16GB card. Fortunately, after taking first 15 pictures, I've checked them in Play mode and saw the problem.
I re-inserted the card but this time checked every shot in playback to confirm.
That was a single accident of this kind. Now I purchased SanDisk Extreme II 32GB and wait to take pictures and movied during the coming weekend.
This camera (assembled in China) has few quality control problems, so it seems to me that the card socket and its contacts could be the issue.

Ive got a replacement camera on its way once this one goes back. I'm a little uneasy about this camera now. In over 10,000+ photos over the years with Canon equipment I've never ever lost a single memory.

There was no error over the weeks. Nothing to give warning or a hint as to any problems to come.

I believe the DVX is made in Japan, if I'm not mistaking. I hope it really isnt the production in China and quality control thats letting this slip through the cracks.

I'm not too thrilled about this now.. First I read about a bunch of left side strap mount issues.. Now I experience this.

FYI - Many experienced shooters (still and video) make it part of their routine to re-format a card whenever it goes out of the camera to a computer, another camera, card reader, whatever - and then gets re-inserted. This can help prevent possible headaches and lost data. Just saying.

Also, faulty cards are not unheard of.

Although not impossible, I frankly think the possibility that your camera was the root of these problems is slim. More likely it was an unfortunate combination of events.

In any case, I can sure see why you're upset and hope you can recover your kids birthday party stuff.

I would not blame the camera without trying it with a better SD card first.

All SD cards are not the same, ADATA is one of the cheapest brands out there. I have used various Transcends since August and have yet to have a single problem.

The difference between my Transcend and the one you used is that you put in a card that was being used in a CANON into the GH1 and didn't format it.

With that said, I would recommend you try Photorec http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

its a free recovery tool to get your files of a card, it's worth a try and has worked for me when someone accidentally reformats or deletes all their data off a card.
