So i just picked up a 7D and am blown away with the iso range and the fact that it actually picks up images in no light situations... but the noise thru the higher iso's is very heavy.
I'm now debating if the 5D image will be good enough to pay the extra $1000. And with the 24p coming out with the 5D in the new year maybe I should wait???
I've been shooting with hvx200 for a few years so i'm pretty camera versed but i've heard the 5D is harder to work with? How so??? If its minimal, I might go with a 5D cause at least then i'll have the peace of mind knowing i have the camera with the better image...
im torn between the 2...

I was gonna post almost this exact same question. The only delima I have is that if i buy the 5D then I don't have enough $$$ left for at least minimal audio RodeVideoMic/H4n, nor my last lens choice Tamron 17-50mm f2.8. So I'm stuck between having a practically full setup with slightly lowere quality imaging, to having the more superior image producing tool, but much less production equipment. What to do, what to do..............

I would never buy the 5D2 for the one reason that it doesn't shoot in 24p

You won't know until the firmware upgrade how good the 24p is though. Might have more jello for example. From the many forum posts I have read by people who actually have both cameras, after grading the video quality is the same. For example:
http://www.cinema5d.com/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=6743
This is my impression from reading as much as poss to find out which camera is better cos I want to know, I am starting to think a lot of the difference is in people's minds or down to the lens/full frame difference - the actual res is the same. Just my opinion based on what I've read so don't attack me for it.
Anyway to me it's not clear cut, there are pros and cons. Hopefully not too long after the firmware upgrade there will be something better anyway (i.e. a different camera), that's what I'm waiting for, and will settle for my 7D in the meantime.

I meant compared to the 7D. Dual digic on the 7D not on the 5, they may have improved it between release of the 5 and 7. I'm speculating, and that was the rumour that came out of the 24 DP's testing (I think that's who was testing the 5D 24p). Apparently there was too much jello which is why they didn't release the 24p yet.
Anyway that is just a rumour, can't remember how the 29.97 7D jello compared to the 30p 5D jello, maybe they will be the same... my point was you won't know what the 24p is like on the 5D until it is released. They have different hardware so it's not unreasonable to assume there will be differences between them!Last edited by ASG; 11-11-2009 at 02:52 AM.

The manual controls on the 5D are the same as on the 7D.
Current cameras: Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH2 | Sony HDR-SR11 (infrared modded)

what good does it do to buy a camera if you can't afford anything that makes it functional?
"I've got this sweet car! but i can't afford gas and it didn't come with tires"
I wouldn't buy the 5D only to have to wait for the 24p update. By the time that happens, IF it happens (remember, nothing in life is guaranteed*), the market could have shifted entirely.

Yeah if you want 24p I'd go with the 7D. Canon has not said when the 24p for 5D would come out other than sometime in the first half or so of 2010. That could be 6-9 months from now. Long time doing those painful 30p to 24p conversions in post. You can always sell your 7D for a 5D the moment the firmware appears.
