Right, so the consensus seems to be that the LCD display by itself is not sufficient enough to properly focus with these cameras.

What method do you use and why?

I'm thinking about going with a Sony FX280 DVD player as an external monitor. I'll be rail mounting my rig for the most part anyways

Please read this forum thread, which you may find a pleasant surprise. If you're going with a DVD player, the 7d also appears to do 480p video out.

I don't have the $300+ for a z-finder, so I was thinking about something like this:

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Anyone is using this Cavision DSLR viewfinder and can share with us information about its usability?

    Thanks.

That cavision viewfinder looks great (for the price). Is the Mark II screen a similar size as the 7D?

They're identical in size and resolution. But the 7D screen has some new improvements:

    - The cover is now a tough piece of reinforced glass instead of a clear resin cover. All other Canon DSLRs have used a resin cover.
    - They removed the air gap between the cover and the actual screen by filling it with an optically-clear filler. This helps strengthen the cover and limits contrast loss in bright conditions.
