I pretty much figure anyone really serious about audio would record on a dedicated device. Zoom's aren't expensive, and well well worth it. Plug it in your mic in port for easy sync, wham, done.

Yeah it's a little disappointing. We all waited years for our DV cameras to come sporting XLR jacks on the lower priced end of things. Instead of just 1/8" jacks. Now we're back to square one with these HDSLR's.

don't get me wrong, I'd rather have control of it. Hell my $700 HF10 has it, but I dont use it (I use the Zoom H4n and its synced through the cam). Still even then, with "improved audio" on the 7D you'd figure they could add another little feature on in the firmware.

Just give Tramm Hudson half a day with a fresh coffee pot and the 7D... you might get manual audio gain control before dinner. :-)
