My next shoot requires me to film a basket ball type music video that has over 1000 people in the background. What do I do for talent release forms... Have them fill one out at a time or is there better way to do this ?

Look into group release forms. This is best for extras/groups.

Usually a single paper with a simple release "use your image for anything anywhere anytime, blah blah" and then at the bottom there will be several lines where people can put their name, some sort of contact, and their signature. Just pass the form around, or get them in a line and have them sign it. For 1000 I would get a few of these forms though.

If you have any time ask to have "blah blah has the right to use your image at this event" writen on the tickets for the event. If not put a sign located at each entry stating by entering this area you are allowing your image yada yada...

May want to check with a legal person about this though to cover yourself.

Check with the event coordinators. They may already have a clause written into their legal papers. If not try to get one added. Also, IANAL so caveat emptor.

I've heard of filmmakers doing this, but often they would say "but I'm not sure if it actually works, it just keeps people from suing or complaining, hopefully"

But I've heard this isn't legally correct.

I had the same question... we're filming a live concert tomorrow and wanted to do something at the doors, saying that by entering and attending the concert they're allowing us to use their image and likeness.

Every time I'm on a job like this that's exactly what they do. Put up signs that state clearly "by entering this establishment you are permitting yourself to be..." etc etc. That's the first thing and the second is to get release forms for whoever is very clearly shown in front of camera.
