yet another cheap GH1 rig :)

Since I have a bunch of Tim's Indifocus gear - and my GH1 finally arrived - I thought I'd post pictures of the outdoor handheld configuration (I say outdoor because of the Hoodman on the flipout screen (and because it's always sunny where I live ;)



It's mostly the indislider basic parts (with modified quick-releases on everything but the camera riser)



I thought about cutting the carbon fiber rods short but it started to feel a little cramped - this way the flip out screen is right where I want it when the camera is on my right shoulder. The lens in the photo is an 50mm Canon FD - but the kit lens fits also. SD card slot and battery compartment both accessible.

Changing from this configuration into tripod/slider/car mount is very fast.

Overall still a little front heavy (fixable with longer rods and weights at back of rods) but I'm fine with it for now - of course in comparison to zacuto etc this is dirt cheap ;)

When you get weights for the back, are you just going to cleverly attach ankle weights, or did you have a 15mm attachment weight in mind?

I am having a similar issue with balancing a shoulder rig, and I don't want to drop too much cash on the redrock counterbalance.

not yet tried it on the slider...give me few days ;) - the bast**d only just arrived friday afternoon...

also things were complicated somewhat by finally getting an LX3 so I was torn between two toys.

that said - yes I will of course - I have yet to mount the slider itself across the back of my jeep (yes - half in half out ;)) - should be a pretty cool shot if we get it right.

Widest lens I have is a 24mm - I got a 55mm 0.45 adapter which feels like it makes that 24 a 19 or 20 equivalent which is better but not ideal...

I know I should be using superfast rectilinear wides but I don't feel like spending the money. I may see how my Peleng 8mm fares once I unsqueeze it...but that'll have to come later.

as for the weights - I intend to do neither...Tim (from www.indifocus.com) is going to make a set of 15mm rod weights that are cheap but quite functional...I think he already has the prototypes made - will check in

With the ZaZaSlider I'm the same.
I'm shooting a lot with GH1 but haven't found a shot that needs a dolly or track and had not time to break it out for fun. I have a shoot with a japanese jazz drummer coming up soon. I might get to use the slider then. Shallow dof and a slide should be fun.

BTW, what focus grip is that that you have on the canon lens? (FD 50 i presume)

do you mean what focus gear it is ?? or which Follow focus it is...(yes it is the FD 50 as far as the lens is concerned)

The follow focus is a slightly modified unit from Indifocus (modified in so far as it uses ball bearings that grip the shaft tightly as opposed to drilled aluminum + set screw as is in the stock units...makes the handle turn more true) - the gears are some NOS (new old stock) Aquatica gears...the model number is 18663

got them from B&H a few months back - I think they are all out now

Could you please post more pictures. I am between this shoulder mount or the redrockmicro for $150 more. How do you feel about it so far? Any suggestions? My GH1 is coming on this wednesday!

My Indifocus DSLRsm is on the way, should be here monday...I am very excited...I like the design more than standard shoulder mounts like this/redrocks, as it has handles that go really far down and make it easier to hold (waist level.)

Will post pics when it gets here

I'm putting together an equip package for a short and I'm torn between getting the Redrock for hand held and Tim's Indi stuff...pictures would be very much appreciated!

My favorite one is this first one - basically it's the stock shoulder mount (old style - not the new one with the so-called trombone handles...basically the only differences are in the handles and in the shoulder pad)...personally I like the current shoulder pad fine - but have not tried the new one yet.



You can see the Manfrotto 394 quick release (it's actually bolted onto the indifocus riser because I'm never gonna take the base plate off...and because I hate things that twist easily ;))...

btw the other part of that 394 (the bit that screws into the camera) - required a bit of modification - about 3-4mm of aluminum chunk taken off one side with a dremel/hacksaw - so the battery could come out easily.

Here's a closeup of the shoulder mount (remember this is the original shoulder mount - not the new one that one of the posters above was complaining about)



Here's a closer look at the 394 Manfrotto plate



There are 2 bolts holding this in place - one is a 3/8" 16 (which goes into where the tripod threads are on the manfrotto plate anyway) - the other is a 1/4" 20 - which requires drilling and tapping (easy to do as the plate is aluminum).
