Is it the auto-focus mechanism? Flip it into manual focus and see if it goes away.

It went away when I flicked it off phew

The HMC 150 book, by Barry Green, says: "...This is completely normal, there's nothing wrong with the camera. What you're hearing is an element of the optical image stabilizing (OIS) system. When the camera is powered on, the OIS system is energized, and the rattle disappears."

I'm surprised this needed to be a sticky, this was one of the first things I was told about the dvx100 when we used them in school.
