Just today I've got a new iMac so now I can watch native MTS files with VLC but when I was on my ancient Steam Machine (PC) I used Format Factory, a brilliant little tool that converts anything to almost anything else.
Another great tool for conversion purposes I use is TMPGEnc 4.0 Xpress.
http://www.aunsoft.com/ is also good but is not free.
