hi guys- big decision to make here. I built a 3.0 ghz pc with a gig ram and 250 gig hd.

Do i get a kickass capture card or a MAC with final cut pro. Are there REALLY big differences between final cut and premiere? can I make a film look the same in adobe that i can in fcp? thanks!

all of the "pro or prosumer" nles do the same stuff. *depsite what anyone says,..espescially mac users with their fcp. you can get the same result from any respectable nle. ppro is lacking nothing from the others..espescially with the new 1.5 coming out. the best thing to do is try them out and see which one will suit your editing or workflow style the best, as well as integrate with the other programs you intend on using. then build your system around the nle of your choice. if you have to use a mac, then use it, if you need a pc , then use it. *you can argue till days end which is better but the mere fact that there is *such a bif argument about which nle, and which computer system (pc or mac) and which this or that.. is all just a confirmation that what is truley"best" .. is on an individual basis. ... just like i dont wear size *5 shoes, but they would be perfect for someone else. and i cant tell them tha that they are stupid for wearing them cause my size is better. *just make your own choice. your an artist.. not a robot. so express yourself, and use the tools that let you do it best.

I'm in agreement with loser, don't listen to the hype. Owning the trendiest NLE won't make you a better editor. You've already got an awsome PC, just get a good NLE for the PC and learn it well. What matters is the final product, not what it was done on.

Also, if you're working with DV and the capture card your looking to get is a firewire card, then really any $30 firewire card will do. It's not necessary to spend big bucks on the same thing as you won't get any better quality out of a more expensive card.

I concur with the above. Zach, I built the same kind of PC, only with three hard disks of 120 Gb each, two of them devoted to video footage only. And I use a basic firewire capture card that works just fine.

I think most (if not all) NLEs come in 30-day tryout versions, so why don't you take advantage of that to see which one you like best ? And, depending on what you plan to do (special effects, sound/music processing, DVD authoring and so on), don't overlook integration issues between software packages.

In terms of money, the finest gaming card you get (overkill for video editing, IMO) is about $500. A Mac with FCP is going to be at least 5 times that amount. And if you already have a 3ghz PC, then it doesn't make any sense at all to switch, not when Premiere Pro is every bit as good. For that money, I'd buy a raid enclosure and a couple of extra HDDs for video.

I think it's no contest. Stick with the PC.

No question. Stick with your PC, and load up on drive space.
As the light changed from red to green to yellow and back to red again, I sat there thinking about life. Was it nothing more than a bunch of honking and yelling? Sometimes it seemed that way.

Premiere Pro doesn't get the credit it deserves, most likely because people associate it with the previous versions which were very lacking.

i completely agree.. its really the same as after effects, except for editing.
i hear alot of people bash it, but theyve never used any version passed 6.0 or somthing, and ppro is a pretty new ballgame. even 6.5 wasnt so bad. but ppro is nice ..very nice, and the 1.5 version is just like sweet candy in my mouth. anyway its pretty rediculous ..sort of like bashing peter jackson (director of "the lord of the rings" trilogy) as a bad director because once upon a time he made "the feebles"

I just saw an old Peter Jackson movie last night called "dead alive". It was known as the "gorriest horror movie of all time" and rightly so, although I would have to call it one of the funniest horror movies of all time. I can see why people would bash him at one time, but he has made up for it recently.
