We're working with a Sony FX1 and it has component and S-Video output. We need to bring it a mixing board that accepts S-VIDEO and BNC.
Composite is higher quality than S-video, and so I'd rather output composite; but is there an adaptor or anything to plug the composite cables into BNC cables that will run to the mixer?
Also, we need LONG and STURDY cable as this will be for a roaming camera at a live event. Any recommendations?
Also, is BNC higher quality than Composite? Just wondering. Now, I am guessing that once we output composite, we'll be limited to composite quality even if we adapt to a BNC cable - is that right? Even so, just wondering if pure BNC is better quality than composite.
Finally - is this correct: RCA < S-VIDEO < Composite < BNC < HDMI?

What is this 'mixer' you are using for video?
Are you in some kind of TV studio?
and BNC == Composite. S-Video is better in terms of quality.
You ask a ridiculous number of questions.. what is it you're working on exactly? (curious).Don't sweat the petty stuff and don't pet the sweaty stuff.

Not True. Composite is lower quality than s-video.Composite is higher quality than S-video
Technically BNC is the Terminating interface not the signal. SDI is often BNC so is Gen Lock/Blackburst/world clock etc.
A composite signal can be RCA or BNC. If your switcher is SD and only options are S or Composite BNC then use the S input.
Remember S is a sort of component cable but not RGB component it is Y C component.
What you can do is use BNC with a Y C splitter to do long svideo runs with BNC cables rather than long S cables. It is just an adapter that has Svideo on one end and 2 BNC outs on the other. One for Y (Luminance) and one for C (Chromanance)
Hope that makes sense.
www.markertek.com is a great source for adapters and signal path widgets of all kinds

Sorry Just Noticed this This would be correct.Finally - is this correct: RCA < S-VIDEO < Composite < BNC < HDMI?
RCA AND BNC are terminating interfaces.
RCA id used for COMPOSITE VIDEO, COMPONENT VIDEO, ANALOG AUDIO and DIGITAL AUDIO just to name a few. I have even seen coffee cups that heat up and the input from the power supply was RCA.
BNC is also a termination and NOT A SIGNAL PATH. BNC is othen used for Composite video WHICH IS THE SAME AS RCA COMPOSITE VIDEO. (Thats the yellow one on your DVD player) BNC is used on many different PRO applications for a variety of signals.
SO this would be more accurate.
IN SD VIDEO
composite<s-video<Componenet
HDMI does not really enter into the equation because it is HD. There are converter boxes that take HDMI to BNC (SDI) and even componenet formats.
So the moral of the story is that terminating interface is not the same as signal path.

Composite is the lowest-quality video signal ever devised. It mixes the luminance and chrominance information all together. S-video is substantially better, as it splits the luminance away from the chrominance, but the chrominance is still mixed. Component is better still, as the chroma signals are split from each other.
So, as Jason said, in ascending order of quality for analog SD video, it's:
composite = worst
s-video = much better
component = best

sorry guys, I was intermixing composite AND componenet terminology. To clarify, is composite the RCA cables (red, yellow, white?) and component the one with seperate color channels (red, green, blue) that also needs a seperate audio signal?
If so, what I meant was, we can output from the camera either S-Video or Component... I was thinking we should go from component to BNC to achieve better quality (rather than S-Video to S-Video, or S-Video to BNC) is that right? And if so, is there a simple adaptor to plug the ends of a component cables into BNC cables?
So if I am understanding correctly then, BNC is the same as SDI, and BNC is not lower or higher quality, it just... actually, ok, I don't understand BNC exactly...

BNC is just a connecter. Like RCA, but its a BNC. You can terminate a component cable in BNC or RCA, doesnt really matter signal wise. BNC is just a more robust locking connector and common on pro gear. RCA's can easily pull out and are a general pain. http://www.svideo.com/bncpigad.html will adapt a male rca to male bnc.
