    HPX500 direct to hard drive

Hi, for long interviews I wanted to record direct to external hard drive (less of an issue now, with the 16 & 32 GB cards I know) when a producer requests it. I tested through my MacBook Pro / FCP 6.01 and was only able to get 1080i to go through. From an earlier post I see there's an issue with 720 PN through firewire, but is there a reason that 720 P or PA won't go onto an external drive? (I used a 500 GB Western Digital My Book Studio with firewire 800 I/O) . Thanks, John / JDM NYC www.JDMPromedia.com.

I am amazed you got 1080i through. The manual (or something I read) said only DV can go through firewire to a drive.

Wherever you read that, it was wrong. Every mode the HPX500 shoots can transfer through the firewire, so live 1080 or live 720 shooting is entirely possible. The only mode that doesn't go through is the 720pN modes.

ahh. That was it. Thanks for the correction Barry. I think my mind just switched off when I saw no 720pN for whatever reason and only recently started shooting projects 1080pA....So, JDM, it appears no clue is in sight for your problem...

We tried to hook up a hd700 HDV deck via firewire and only the DV mode worked.
