Is $1,000 to much to ask for shooting a wedding for a family member? Its a cousin of mine that is getting married. Should it be higher if I add a second shooter or if they need me to shoot and edit and deliver on dvd? Shooting weddings is not my thing however I have shot a couple back in the day that turned out fine.

How can you charge your own family member? ;D you should just do this as a gift. I personally don't charge family not enless I hate them. ;)

Did my cousins wedding last year. Anyone else I would have charged $1500 to $1800 for what I gave her. I have booked 3 weddings since from referals from her. Paid for itself and more. What does your cousin do for a living? I hope you don't need their services in the future... Oh yeah my cousin is a Physicians assistant.

Actually, its been my personal experience that family and friends are the worst "clients" to work for, even if you are doing it for free or cost. They generally treat you worse than any of the services they've hired, they give you no time to do what you need to do, they usually have no idea of the true value of your services, but in the end, they still expect perfect results. I've had a few experiences that if I had it to do over again, I would have charged them double! But then, I have a few awfully strange relatives...

Depends on how close we are... My cousin's wedding I did for free as a gift. Come to think of it, I have done a few family weddings for free... but as for friends I tell them I have a friends and family discout in order to pay my bills as a video professional. I like to give them the "deluxe package" that I'd normally charge $2500 for $1200-$1500 depending on their financial situation. People don't realize what goes into a professionally done wedding. So usually I'll show them! I'll invite them over to take a look at just a little bit of wedding editing and then the understand... ;D

With family I rarely charge depending on how closely related, but I let them know I will use it as a demo. I usually do extra stuff, growing up montage, love story, etc.
There is usually in my mind a pro-rated schedule.....brother & Sister free, first cousin free, second cousin $300.00, third cousin $600.00 and so on dependiong on how close we are personally.'Weinberg's Law' "If builders built buildings the way programmers wrote programs, then the first woodpecker that came along would destroy civilization."
