I have that cheap Polaroid 15" ($213 at WalMart).
I have used it component from HVX for focus and composition, but would not compare it to a true production monitor. For $213 it does a barely adequate job but, as I said, if focus is not critical at least you can see composition. Have also used it HDMI to test a Decklink Intensity card.

My Polaroid 15" is 16:9. It has component HD as well as HDMI.

i guess the rest of us who focus for A LIVIING just never though of going to sams/costco... and the whole rest of the industry would CHOOSE to pay $3000 for a monitor ...?

Not totally useless for focusing, but certainly would not compare to Panasonic LH1700 or other production monitor. Composition, viewing, less-than-critical situations, it has its uses. It certainly displayed a very decent image monitoring via HDMI from Blackmagic Intensity card. But I would certainly caution anyone not to expect miracles from it. It is a $200 WalMart consumer TV.
