Express35 and Gini both make great rigs for a fraction of the cost of a Redrock or Letus. The build quality is essentially the same and I've used both and found them comfortable and durable.

LCDs generally have very greyish blacks. CRTs are best for viewing correct colors, if you happen to have one on hand.

Definitely turn off AGC. If you have the money, look into getting a preamp. That will let you listen to your audio and give you better results.

Looks like dust or hair. You can find some sensor cleaning kits on Amazon for a few bucks, they should do the trick.
