The Standard and REC709 gamma curves are noisy from 0-about 25 ire. Above that they're clean as a whistle.
The noise is mostly in the Blue and some in the Red channels (green is clean) as you'd...

I own the Merlin and Blackbird for the record. Merlin = waste of time. I gave up on it.
The Blackbird is far superior and you'll be able to fly a much lighter rig but with much greater inertia...

The fauxLog BS has found its way over to the FS700 crowd. It gives you nothing only problems.
My profiles produce lovely skin tones ( assuming they've been exposed correctly) and clip with...

There's very few experts out there as far as I can see, just a load of go to guys for camera companies to sell equipment. Their job is to make you feel good about your purchase nothing more.

Yeah, definitely go with a DSLR that produces an inferior image to the FS100 that seems like a great move! Whatever floats your boat.
It appears you've purchased a $4000 camera when you thought...
I have an old Kata cover designed for Sony PD/HDV/Canon XHA1 range and it fits wonderfully....on backwards! It works really well with the loupe in fact that's the only use I have for the loupe for...

Super job. That part of the world is one of my favourite places on Earth and you have captured beautifully. I enjoyed you Malacca video but this one topped that.
I look forward to the...

Before you throw yourself into the unrewarding world of Knee and Slope settings we haven't got to the bottom of whether your highlight detail is just being clipped. There are plenty of...

That is certainly true when using the Standard gamma curve. The auto knee is 99% accurate and as good as I can set manually with the odd time it guesses wrong which is not often.
Do NOT use it...

Indeed. But can we be sure those clouds are not just 100-109 values that have been clipped?
Like soooo many FS100 users blamed their camera poor highlight performance yet hadn't got a clue about...
Should be fine.
You can extend the gimbal to put more moment above the pivot for lighter cameras. A lot of their literature shows DSLRs on the rig too.
I'm loving the Blackbird...
I can't compare against the 4000 but against the Merlin it's better in every respect. I like the fact that you can tighten up the gimbal which makes using it in a...

It's also worth noting that the forum software also recompresses posted images and does a horrible job and removes the fidelity of the highlights. An image of skin tones I was quite pleased with...

Nikon 50mm 1.2 AIS would be my choice.
Check out ALL of the Nikon AIS primes, lovely IMHO. The F1.8 version is at bargain basement prices and is a good lens too. I understand the 1.4 version is...

Sam you are losing top end with your knee so high and so flat. You could afford to come down a little but go steeper
I get much better roll off with a much lower knee but a much steeper slope.
12-17-2012, 10:58 AM
Are you able to repeat that high saturation light test? If you can try changing the slope setting and go more positive.
I have a theory that the slope angle is too low which causes a...
Blackbird arrived today, balanced and flying like a boss. It's miles better than the Merlin in terms of speed of balancing and control while flying. It's also a great deal lighter for a much more...

That's interesting. I recall someone posting a still from inside a nightclub where there was a black ring round bright lights. It was never pursued any further.
I have seen this in news...

Bang on where I am. That's why I said I'd go with a used F5. In 2 years a F5 + Recorder used will be in my ball park or someone will have produced the camera I want at the price I want. The...

Why E mount?
Well I used that to place the camera in terms of market sector, a NEX version of the F5 if you will. You may consider the FS700 as that camera with the RAW recorder.
12-16-2012, 02:46 AM
I haven't seen any FS700 footage that I thought was any better than the FS100 in fact I have found it altogether much noisier, not just in low light, and not the step up I would consider worth...
12-15-2012, 01:38 PM
That's my next move. I'll get a used F5 when I upgrade my FS100. Everything in between is bit meh. The FS700 is one step forward and one back.
Im hoping there will be an F4 (an F5 without the 4k)...
Nice one Dermot.
Very much looking forward to seeing the fruits of your labour.

Yeah, I though that lens flare was way too perfect to be real too.

If the adapter says G Mount the implication is that has its own aperture ring so it works with Nikon G lenses that lack a manual aperture.
There are plenty of very cheap Chinese made adapters on...
