Hi,

I put together a 7 minute video, it is compressed (H.264 @ 8kbps) :

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=6PUL5X80

There are some macro blocking and compression artifacts in the dark blue and black sky due to the compression, this is the original flag pole shot for comparison in DVCPRO HD:

Enjoy,

Thanks!

I can't get the 2nd clip to play. Is it standard DVCPROHD?

yes DVCPROHD after reverse pull ( 1024 24P (0ve 60i) -> cinema tool ->1020 24P), file its big though (20', 230.9 MB).

I can't open the file at all. Cinema Tools says that there is "No codec for this clip." Is anyone else struggling with it?

Also I noticed that there is a lot of CA in the footage. Is it the 17x Fuji? is CAC on? What do you think of the lens?

it's the fuji 17X with CAC.

I zoomed all the way in & out and look for high contrast scenarios (trees and sky), I think for the price, is not that bad. I'm happy with the lense, it is what I could afford anyways, it does the job, I guess a little bit of sharpness would be nice, Jan (Panasonic) mentioned the canon is a little bit sharper. Compared to the CA I used to get with my HD100 at full zoom, this is nothing!

Gustavo

I didn't see much CA... Where is the offending CA? I thought the lens looked pretty good (considering the price).

Thanks for sharing the footage. My observations (after looking at it on a slightly larger monitor)

I think the image looks very impressive. Very low noise and grain free. It all looked pretty sharp - so I'm guessing focussing is not a problem, even with the 1.5in viewfinder. I could see the CA on high contrast edges - but it didn't seem to "scream" at you. The CAC function seems to mute it, and I've used considerably more expensive lenses which have had far more hideously obvious CA.

And the colour rendition - of course - looks gorgeous.

Having seen this I now wish Panasonic Europe weren't such arses, and actually sold this camera at a reasonable price over here!

How much more is the HPX here compared to the US...?

The HPX in the UK (with 4 x 16GB cards) is can be found for around £10,000 (ex VAT) which is about $19,900.

I am reliably informed that in the USA the same package can be found for about $13,500 which is about £6,800.

£3,200 is a hell of a premium to pay - and yes I know there is a 19% EU import duty that Panasonic have to pay, but Sony XDCAM HD camcorders manage to be very slighly cheaper here than they are in the US...

What gives?

As someone suggested - perhaps a trip to the US is in order... although I know I'd be the one that got stopped in customs on the way back! (guilty face) Hee! Hee!

All the daylight stuff looked very blue. Did you white balance it?

I thought the low light footage looked really impressive--ie, no visible noise, a very smooth image.
Question: some of the background trees didn't look particularly sharp. Is it me, or would others agree?

yea, and blow some dirt on it... what's the worse that could happen? (seriously, what could happen?)

that's funny that the one thing I noticed the most after looking for the noise and finding none is the color!!! :)
G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S color!!! :D

BTW where do you live Gustavo? is that FL?

They could take it away AND fine me for attempting to import items without paying duty...

Although last time I was abroad filming, we did all the proper paperwork (Carnet), and it was a bit of a pain-in-the-arse 'cause we HAD to get it stamped, but nobody cared and it was a real hassel finding the customs officer at the airport!

aghhh... well then it might be better to go the safe way... and pay up...

Gustavo, is that the West coast of FL? Hurricane surfers?

what shutter speed are you using?

gustavotg

Surf footage was shot at Cocoa beach Florida, balanced at 4300K. Beach shot 6:30 - 7:30PM, Surfers 7:30 to 8PM.
I didn't carry a tripod, all focusing with the VF or LCD. Shutter was Off, so I guess it was 1/48.
