View Full Version : Is DVCPROHD going to disappear for AVC-Intra

I'm really, really close to getting a 500. Part of me getting the go ahead is basically saying that this is the camera for the next 5-10 years. I know all kinds of things will happen and great cameras will come out, but that's not what I'm guaranteeing against. What I'm saying is that this camera will make great pictures that will still look great for HD 5-10 years down the road. That's my main concern.

I've made a bad recommendation if AVC-Intra is the be all and end all and DVCPRO HD fades into oblivion. What is the expected lifespan? Is DVCPRO HD on its way out.

Considering that Panasonic keeps introducing brand-new DVCPRO-HD cameras, and that neither the HDX900, HPX500, HVX200, or HPX2000 includes AVC-Intra, and that it's only available as an option on the HPX2000 (or as standard on the HPX3000), I can't see why you'd think that DVCPRO-HD is going to disappear any time soon, certainly not to be obsoleted by AVC-Intra. Not yet, not for quite a while.

10 years? Maybe. Five years? Doubtful. It should still be going quite strong for years into the future.

Thanks, it's kind of the answer I expected, I just wanted some other verification of my thinking.

In my mind, if a camera is making pretty pictures in HD (in high motion, high detail, high contrast scenes) it will still be making pretty pictures no matter what comes down the line a couple of years from now.
