Anyone have any info on the optimal Pelican case for the HPX?

I have been working with Pelican to make a case for the 500. Right now I am suffering through the pluck and pull foam but eventually we will have custome foam in it. The case will also hold the BT-LH80W monitor, the P2 Gear, batteries, a passel of P2 cards, tripod plate and the AJ-RC10, which if you don't have one of those, then it will make a nice place to put a number of other items.

Case won't be done for a month or so.

Don't remember the number of the case we started with, sorry, but I am thinking it will be a very nice case.

Best,

Jan

Awesome!

Is there a size that can hold the camera body and remain within airline carry-on limits?

There might be in their soft case products, but not in the hard case.

At least as far as I could tell.

Just wanted to check in and see if there was any update on the case. We're filming boot camp and going to use the HPX in a couple weeks.

I am using a pelican 1650 - its large - but i quickly used the space with batteries - charger, viewfinder. Didnt even get the lens and follow focus and mattebox in there - needed another case for those.

I asked Jan about the custom case for the HPX500 and she said that it should be shipping by mid August. Below is her reply.

----------------------------------

I am thinking we will start shiupping in mid August at the latest.

It is a very cool case, in that it does have rom for hte camera with lens and VF, plus the 8" monitor , a P2 Gear or stoe, P2 cards, cables and batteries. List price will be in the $650 range and it will be solid foam, not the pick and pluck. I am prety jazzed about it.

Best,

Jan

Just waiting on our HPX to arrive and would love a Pelican case to keep it safe. Where do I buy the case you are discussing here.

Thanks, Ian

Robert Lane's convincing testimonial of Pelican cases has had me waiting for this case as well.. I have always carried my cameras on, but these days that's getting more problematic - and I'm going to be shooting in seven Eastern and mid-west states (all domestic travel) in October..

So, when and where will I get this case?

And, also, has anyone tried to carry on a 500, dissassembled of course, in a PortaBrace carry-on? (the one that's exactly carry-on size, 45" total, with the cover) - that's what I've used for my super16mm camera in the past...

I carry my DSR 450 in a Storm iM2600. It will go in BA lockers and even Easyjet. Not sure about US carriers though.

The case will fit the camera, wide angle lens and even my Powerbook. Not sure if it would fit a HPX though. You have to remove the lens and battery obviously.

Don't let the lack of a "Peli" badge worry you. Storm cases are just as good, if not better IMHO.

I just received 2 of these cases. They are frickin' huge, but they hold lots of accessories.

You could toss it out the back of a speeding truck and only damage the pavement that it lands upon - your gear will be fine.

The camera fits like a glove with lens on but battery off.

Nice but huge!

What's the case #?

It's a Panasonic SHAN-HPX500 built by Pelican.

I'm not crazy about the large "Panasonic" logo on the lid, but its there, crying "steal me - please!"

Here they are:

How much does case weigh with/without gear? 50lbs is the magic number when it comes to the airlines.

It's a pig - 45lbs. empty.

And where was it purchased? Through a Pelican dealer or Panasonic dealer?

I really like the case, but there is no way I can get by with these only. I'll have to get soft cases as well - which I was hoping to avoid.

$540.00(US) each.

Now I don't know if that is the going street price or not. I just plunked down $60,000 for the entire order and I know that I received pretty good pricing on most of the items.

The list price on the case is $650, the Dealer can offer a lower price if they wish. These are only available through a Panasonic dealer as the design is a Panasonic/Pelican collaboration, the foam die-cut belongs to Panasonic.

Hope this helps,

As far as the Panasonic Log, I thought about not putting it on the case, but then I realized that this case is pretty popluar, I see them coming off the ramp all the time, so I felt it would make your case more recognizeable. It can be locked and frankly if someone is going to steal your case, and it is this big, I really do believe that people will notice that a guy 6'2" was walking away with a Panasonic case.

The logo is subtle, in that it isn't is screaming orage but rahter a dark blue against a dark gray. I think it looks pretty nice for a case logo.

All the best,

Jan

I don't know, Jan... I think I like Mule's solution of replacing the Panny logo with the "live snakes" decal.

Well my thought was if you din't happen to have access to the snakes or if you had a strong aversion to handling them. Or was I just taking his suggestion too literally? ;-)

I have been using these cases for about a month now. I must admit that I have found them much more useful than I initially suspected.

Although they can be quite unwieldy and a little on the heavy side, one can really put a lot of camera-specific items in the case along with the camera. I keep a full set of P2 cards, an AC power supply, batteries, several cords, white balance and focus card, and the tripod adapter.

No doubt I am adding even more weight, but the convenience is worth the extra pounds and the weight is still manageable.

A couple of things I would maybe tweak is that I find the rubber seal often drops out of its channel preventing the lid from closing.

Also, I wish that there were one more slot toward the front of the foam where one could slip the camera owners guide into the case as well.

Rubber seal should not be dropping. Pelican sells replacement seals but it usually takes quite a while before they crack/dry rot . Might the seal be just a little too big or stretched out of orig. shape. ? Check for warranty coverage.

There should be a case finder on the pelican website. Just type in the dimensions of your case and see what it gives you. A lot of this seems to depend on whether you need a "camera only case" or something else.

Hmmm... Both cases are doing it and they are only a month old. My guess is that it may be a design flaw with this particular model.

It's a custom-sized case, but maybe the gasket size is just a little off? Maybe some rubber cement would hold it in.

Do you trust the luggage handeling people with the HPX in this case. In otherword what will happen with the cam if the toss the case around very roughly like they always do with luggage???? Will the cam survive? If they drop the case from 4 feet will the cam inside survive?????

Normal airline abuse should not harm the gear. 4 feet onto concrete... not sure. That would be a hell of a thump in any case.

In my opinion, you won't find a better case for protecting your gear.

Actually, I was quite impressed...

Jan had been following this thread, and with no prompting from me (other than what I posted here), Jan contacted me and said that they were going to replace the rubber seal and the foam lid liner for my 2 cases. A couple of days later the new material showed up and all is well.

We are really fortunate to have an actual Panasonic company rep like Jan that will help us work through some of these issues. Not many big companies provide that kind of access or are willing to take the kind of risk normally associated with forum-level, one-on-one communication.

I've had problems with Pelican seals before. I usually just remove them unless water is really a concern.

I wonder if using FedEx or UPS is more/equal/less safe than the airline "throwers"

Well, I just sent one of my cameras (in the Pelican case) via overnight FedEx to North Carolina and back.

Total weight was 65 pounds and the cost was $210 (US) one way.

The case doesn't look like new anymore, but it help up like a tank. I simply zip-tied the case closed and sent it off.

How do the rest of us go about resolving the seal issue with this case. I like the case, checked it on the plane to New York and back, and everything stayed in tact. I did ditch my seal 2 weeks after I got the case though. Got tired of trying to keep it on.

I would try giving Panasonic customer service a call. I'm sure they will take care of it for you. It's known issue with these cases.

I have a question for those of you flying with your HPXs, how are you insured? Isn't it true that if the airline loses or misroutes your case, you are out your HPX? Don't they only cover up to like $300.00 or something?

I have been using UPS. They lost my light kit for a month coming back from Philadelpia to LA. They were going to replace the kit ($4,000.00 for Arri kit and extras) and the day before I was going to fill out the paperwork, they called and said that they found it. At least if FedEx or UPS loses it, they will replace it provided you insured it with them. I am not sure of the limit for FedEx but I know for UPS the limit is U.S. $50,000.00.

I would NEVER fly with a camera like the HPX checked unless it was 100% covered, that's too much money to consider losing.

Best,

Dan

I have all my gear including an edit suite I have in a downtown office with Hartford Insurance. They cover my gear whether I'm on the road or in town. I pay $225 a month, but that covers allot of stuff.

I forgot to mention, I never check my hpx500, I take the lens off, put it in my Kata bag and carry it on with me.
