Picked up a DVX100a with some extra batteries, and uv filter. I'm debating what to get next. My teacher says get the best tripod and head in your budget, a solid foundation for the camera is a must. I on the other hand would like to get some other toys. You know a glidecam 4000, DV multirig, crane, well you get the idea. What did you buy when getting started and if you bought something that could wait to later what would it be? Thanks for your input.

Well I want to try my hand at T.V. style documentaries ( history channel like) so maybe mics would be in the mix.

Tripod and Sound equipment (or find/hire a soundman)
Can't hire, will buy what I can and try to kiss some butt to get free help from other people (especially the ones that have the equipment I need).

LIGHTS LIGHTS LIGHTS! available light only goes so far... cranes and steadicams look great on set and can make a nice looking shot, but if they are lit horrible, you can only polisha turd so much. i created great looking shots with a nice set of sticks and a small light kit for years. now that i have all the other bells and whistels, matte box, follow focus, dolly, crane and steadicam... i find myself using them less than i though i would.

Seriously I think your teacher is right.

a tripod is a must even for docs. i know the dvx doesn't weigh much, but your teacher is definetly right. a microphone is also a must for anything. nothing will kill your production value faster than crappy audio.

Actually not nough said. I appreciate you percieve a lens adapter as a high priority, thats your opinion. But can you qualify that? Even more so with a 35mm adapter do you need a tripod thats up to the job.

i have an m2 and never really use it for run and gun situations. like docs, now i may set it up for static stuff, and yes you need a tripod that's up to the job.... that thing can get heavy.
