How proficient are you with a camera with full manual controls? And how it important is your December project? If you want to be professionaly proficient with it and know it inside and out I'd lean towards getting it now. Not like its an emergency, but sooner rather than later. Really depends on how much previous experience you have. You're first "real" camera will take longer to learn than the 2nd, 3rd etc. As for falling prices, I dont know. My guess is the camera wont fall much, but p2 prices could (again) when the 32s come out. But thats just my guess.
The way Panasonics supply chain runs, you might be hard pressed to find an auth dealer with it in stock by December.....
Ok, maybe a little drastic on the time table but come on....

may i suggest that you get to your local camera rental facility and just play nice with them. they should be happy to let you become familiar with it at their facility. Or maybe just rent it for a day or so. that in itself is a good investment along with the the HVX Boot Camp DVD.
Getting the DVD's and then the camera for few hours and you will be up and running.
good luck,
Eric

If you know you're going to buy one and are open to buying a used one, you could start making low-ball offers now. If you have the time, you could land a great deal.
Months before I actually needed my camera, I made a super low-ball offer ($1300 below asking), thinking he'd turn it down but if he accepted, I'd take it. To my shock, he accepted. Almost brand new. His parents bought it for him and now he needed the cash.
Might as well take advantage of the 6 months you have before you need it. Have fun!

I'd defintely consider purchasing a used HVX - certainly if you can source one for 20 - 25% under current list prices. With only a few moving parts in HD modes, there isn't a great deal of internal wear and tear under normal operating conditions - just the lens motors really.
Naturally, you'll want to inspect lens for coating issues or worse and run the lump through its paces in both SD and HD modes on tape and cards respectively.

be careful with used stuf if youre not familiar with the ins and outs of the camera. there could be something wrong with it that you wouldnt notice. and that can often be more costly to fix than to replace...

I concur with the posts indicating a purchase of Barry's book and DVDs.
Great way to start learning.
Then consider what rebate programs are running and go with a new or used based on that.
