View Full Version : watching my hvx footage through fcp

So i have a question about viewing my hvx footage onto an external tv monitor

When I shot with my dvx, I would take the standard def footage, hook up my camera to my computer and then run an rca video audio out to my tv and there you could see the images you shot on a regular tv. utilizing fcp, my video camera, and a regular home tv.

I did the same with my hvx footage and it plays out the audio but it only has a still image of what i shot. What I mean by that is everytime I pause the fcp timeline it updates the image but it won't play the footage back, just a still holds on the screen. The audio does playback though and just holds on the last image that I had in the timeline. So there is this frozen image with the correct audio running underneath.

I was pleasantly suprised that on my standard def tv that it did put the 16x9 bars on by itself without me doing anything. So it is almost there....it just won't play the image.

Is there a solution for this. I wan to be able to watch my footage and edit like i did with my dvx.

I've been editing my hvx footage just on my 22inch hd computer monitor. which is fine...but isn't there someway I can reference it out to a tv for referencing and viewing?

I also tried to referecne out to a sony standard def 16x9 monitor through my camera, but the same thing happend. the aspect was correct, but it just held on a still frame of the last image on the timeline. Basically it won't play the images out

is there an answer?

Matrox MXO, or Command/F12 in FCP.

Welcome to the world of Hi-def. You CAN NOT view hi-def footage on a regular SD TV. You will need a Hi-def TV if you want to see Hi-def images. Also the HVX will not pass a hi-def signal from the FW port to the HD component output. You can as David said get a Matrox MXO or buy an LCD screen with a DVI input and hook that up to your mac and use that as a cinema desktop display.

that is a bummer that you can't watch it on a standard def tv

now the thing i don't get is when we are shooting hvx we run the rca out to a standard def monitor that has 16x9 capabilities and we can watch the image just fine and it looks great

is that because the camera is doing that and if so can't i use the hvx to monitor out to a regular tv

its a shame we can't watch our stuff on a regular tv if we want too....it should just down convert it in fcp

so you are saying if I used the matrox MXO it would let me reference out to a tv...does it take the hd signal out of fcp and make it standard def?

A whole bunch of information is available at Matrox's web site on the MXO.

V.3 software should be released later this year.

Taje a peak there and you'll get a bunch of info

David S., where's the info on v03 Matrox?
Do you have a direct link tucked away somewhere?

v02 plus FCP 6 has finally totally encompassed my PAL workflow. Long may it continue.

It was a NAB2007 e mail.

Is it top secret, or could you divulge some tidbits?

There are none.

It was a marketing e mail indicating that a new version of software and firmware would be available later this summer.

I only said you cant watch a hi-def signal on a standard tv. You can still view the footage in SD.

The RCA jack out is a SD signal not HD, so the camera is downconverting your signal prior to output. IF you wanted to do that with FCP you would have to downconvert the footage in FCP to a SD timeline and play that out the FW port.

so you are saying if I used the matrox MXO it would let me reference out to a tv...does it take the hd signal out of fcp and make it standard def?

I believe the new version of the MXO will do that, check the specs.

What are you actually looking at when using Cinema Desktop Preview? How close is it to the real thing? Is it real hd you are looking at or a low resolution?

It's the real deal.
I use Cinema Desktop Preview to send an HD signal to my 36" HDTV, looks amazing.
I'm using a VGA-to-HDMI cable from my Mac to a sony XBR 960 HDTV, resolution is 1280x720.
