I wanted to see if this has happened to anyone else - or if I could get some help in troubleshooting what happened.

I was useing my DVX as a record deck at a studio production (I didn't want to record on DVCPro - so the easy soulution was to just use the camera as a record deck)

I was recording video through the S-Video connection - I had picture and audio.

I burned of the first 60 sec of the tape with bars - I ejected that tape to record some b-roll on anouther tape-

I reinserted the master record tape pressed the two buttons on the top of the camera to start the recording -

I saw the red "REC" on the display and saw the timecode running -

I get back to my Avid suit and go to ingest the tape - I notice that in rewinding the tape I dont see any timecode - until it gets to the head of the tape where I recorded the bars -

Thats all that is on the tape the bars at the head of the tape - nothing else -

I can only think that when I loaded the tape back into the camera it missloaded somehow and didnt wrap the tape around the head - except that I saw the red "REC" and timecode running - and I know the tape ran because I had to rewind it to the head when I got back to post.

Further- - the b-roll I shot recorded just fine and I have recorded on other tapes sence then through the SVideo connection -

I don't know what might have happened - like I said I want to try and understand what happened so that I can have confidence in the record - This little snafu Is gonna cost me about $5,000 in having to re-shoot in the studio.

Please post any thoughts you might have -

Thanks
sam

Any one?? - - I know the thought would be - "He just didn't hit record" == But thats not the case - This was a live show - The camera was in right in front of me at the switcher - I know for a FACT the display said "Rec" and that I had time code numbers running - I had to rewind the tape to the head - My stomac dropped when I heard it rewinding all that time and no numbers running in revierse - And I haven't been able to duplicate the problem.

BUT if its possible that the DVX can tell the operator that it is recording and you see the REC lit up and timecode running on the display - But your camera IS NOT recording then THAT IS A PROBLEM!!

Is there somewhere I can send the tape to for it to be checked out? This not recording is going to cost me BIG TIME - You can bet that I will never do a show again without a backup record - But thats not allways the case out in the field.

yes, I had the same thing happen to me. A little different scenario, but the red light comes on and the time code display roles but all I recorded was black. I sent my camera back to JVC they denied that being a common problem. But the engineer understood exactly what I was talking about. He said he gave the camera a thourough inspection and he said that the problem shouldn't happen again. I don't use the camera very often. But it hasn't happened since then.

I would suggest PMimg Barry Green with a link to this thread and ask his thoughts on the situation.
