Hey everyone, sorry if this has been asked before (I searched and couldn't find anything, though I swear it has been discussed), but I recently did a shoot and a lot of the shots were outside. I had everything lit well and it appeared to be find in the LCD and viewfinder, but when I imported it into FCP, it was all pretty dark. Is there a reason behind this?

Thanks.

Happens to me too. It's possible the lcd is brighter, I've heard people mention it before. Same problem you have, though I havn't heard about the view finder

Use the color bar on the camera to adjust the bright of the LCD and then to the same on FCP

make sure your camera setup is 0% because 7.5% adds boost to darks in standard def outputs (does not affect actual p2 recording) but since screen and vf are standard def, artificial boost is added there. so although choosing 0% or 7.5% does not affect onboard recording, it does affect how you see it unless you are using hidef monitor and conseqently may affect how you expose shots.

Hey kstnate, that's pretty good info. I just changed mine now to 0%. I'm not exactly sure why I'm doing it, but I do see the change on the lcd. My question is why would it be at 7.5% by default on the hvx?

You should be using your zebras to set exposure. Setting exposure by looking at the LCD is a recipe for trouble.

Also, computer monitors are typically notably darker than televisions are. It may be that your footage is fine on a TV, just dark on the computer?

Is changing your setup to 0% a good idea overall?

Is there a good preset (system profiler), mac, on a Apple Cinema Display 17" to view and edit HVX200 footage? I plan on eventually getting a HDTV, but not for about a month or so.

The Setup function is designed to show you what your footage is going to look like on an analog monitor. Setup should not be part of a digital recording workflow, but when it goes to SD analog you have to have setup as part of the signal.

The LCD panel on the HVX is considered by the system as an analog SD display device. You should always have setup to 0 for tape, but for P2 you can set it to 7.5 for the LCD panel. I ride it at 0 at all times.

i have found the dvx lcd which is default to the middle on everyting is pretty accurate.

the hvx from what I have seen is not.

Everything comes out dark. So I throw up color bars and adjust. I basically noticed that from the factory settings i make my lcd quit a bit darker and then when i get into post everything looks great. So for me it was a matter of adjusting the lcd, which I never had to do with the dvx. I just always went with the standard lcd settings from the factory for my dvx and got great results.

HVX though i have heard a lot of complaints about things coming back dark. So I darken my overall screen with the color bars up and now I feel my images are coming back more accurate.
