Using the standard mode on the HVX200 I record onto tape for a backup while also recording onto a citidisk harddrive.

In P2 mode however the option to run tape and record say DVCPRO is disabled. I was wondering if anyone had figured out away to use tape but record the better quality DVCPRO format?

I need tape for backup ONLY but would love to record better quality video onto the hard drive.

You can only record DV25 to tape on the HVX.

If you want to record anything other than regular SD DV on the HVX, you have to shoot to P2 card. You can always do a dub to tape after the fact so you have a tape back up (in DV of course) of your DVCPro50 or DVCPro HD material.

Besides, DVCPRO (which usually means DVCPRO25), is the same quality as DV. Only DVCPRO50 is any better.

that's just silly. embrace your technology and trust that it will work. if you cant trust it, you probably shouldnt use it.

and like everyone says, the hvx ONLY shoots dv25 to tape.

Wanting an archival backup is not silly... Most people, on the high end anyway, are doing DLT tape back-ups of RAID5 storage.

no. you are correct Ash. archival backup is not silly. but i think using a technology that you dont trust and shooting lower quality just so you can have a simultaneous backup to miniDV IS

For pedantic clarification, this is only partly true.

On the US/NTSC HVX200, it's true that DVCPRO and DV are the same video quality and same audio quality.

On a DVCPRO tape camera, the tape itself is substantially more robust and of higher quality than a DV tape.

On a PAL HVX200, DVCPRO and DV are different. They're comparable, but different, in that the PAL version of DVCPRO uses 4:1:1 color sampling, and the PAL version of DV uses 4:2:0.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but is it possible to shoot DV to the P2 card or Firestore and tape at the same time so you can archive the tape but have the speed of P2/Firestore input into say FCP?

Yes, you can record DV to tape and a Firestore, as well as to P2 and a Firestore at the same time. You cannot record to tape and P2 at the same time.
