View Full Version : the hvx should have a 4:4:4 SD mode

just thinking about compression, i thought:

"why is DVCPRO50 twice the data rate of normal DV if it's the same def?"

then i realised it's cause it has twice as much colour info, then i thought

"theoretically you could record 4:4:4 standard def at 100Mbps, couldn't you?"

if you could, i can't see that really pushing the hvx too hard as it handles 100Mbps but would pana be able/bother to implement it?

would there be any advantage to recording a 100Mbps standard def signal?

anyway, just a thought.

It is also less compressed than DV.

i saw that thread but i was asking about an SD 4:4:4 mode that would work in camera onto p2 cards, a possible feature in a revision.

do DVCPRO50 and DVCPROHD have the same compression ratio?

i know they have the same colour space

also is there any difference between the DV you get out of any miniDV cam and DVCPRO25?

I doubt it...what are you shooting in SD that requires 4:4:4?

DVCpro50 is 3.3:1, DVCproHD is 6.7:1 compression ratio.

so dvcprohd is more compressed than normal DV, didn't see that one coming

by the way i don't need SD 4:4:4, just interested on a technical level

It is, but also spreads it out over a screen size roughly 3 times the size.

Compare 6.71:1 to HDV. And then look at how well HDV stands on it own next to DVCproHD. Compression numbers are kinda meaningless depending on the Codec. THough Intra frame compression is in my opinion better, its not necesarily the most importnat number.

444 SD is not really necesary unless youre doing MASSIVE compositing, and keying. DVCpro50 is more Video than most of us can handle, ;) , its really great, it CC well, it stands up to lots of pushing around in post. Its a VERY usefull tool, and most people ignore it, opting for 720p when shooting material ment for DVD. Though they have a much better time editing, and working with DVCpro50, for a nealry identical end product. It even up-resses well.
