Resize that bad boy and repost it. (HINT: You've been posting it way too large. Try something about 800 pixels wide.)

The image looks fine and is shockingly sharp. I think that for 95% of users the D40 is more than enough camera and 6MP is perfect for just about any uses.
The only downside of the D40 is that is requires AF-S lenses in order to have full functionality, but you know what? AF-S lenses are better so there is nothing wrong with that. Any of the lenses you really lust after will be AF-S so this isn't a problem.
I like the D40 because it is small, cheap, compact, light, and creates great images.
The benefits of the D80 are only the larger sensor and functionality with other lenses and commander mode.
Is it worth 2x the cost? For 95% of users, no.
Then again, for people who worry more about their gear rather than their images, then the D80 isn't sufficient, but neither is the D200 or D2x... Get what I'm saying? It isn't the arrows, it's the indian...
The D40 is a nice camera as evidenced by your image. Now work on composition and lighting and you're golden.

It looks good, dude. Keep shooting and posting.
I was looking at the D40 for awhile, too. It looks like a great camera and I think you'll be really happy with it.

how can i start working on lighting. for a begginner photographer and video guy whats a great 3 point kit to get...
i work for a non profit so the cheaper the better... i know lighting is everything but havent been able to get that far into my travels yet. Thanks
thanks for the help. You are right, i cant afford the d80 anyways. i rather use the money and get lighting or something else?
By the way.. Whats Composition? sounds interesting

Save and get an SB600 and then learn to bounce light at subjects...

is that a flash for the top of my camera... bounce light at the subjects. I never heard of that.. is this compatible with the d40

It's a flash, $200, and you can either bounce the light or come head on...

congrats on the D40 i got a D50 a while ago and havent been happier my first still cam. I also have the SB600 flash well worth the money. It has a built in diffuser so you may not need an external diffuser which basically just softens the light or "diffuses" it for a less harsh look. I never realized how much a real flash helps as i was always used to just seeing point and shoot pics with that horrid flash look to them but once you get into bouncing light etc you will understand the benfits of a real flash :)

this is a shot using the built in diffuser on the SB600 with the flash pointed directly at the subject so you can get an idea again im just a beginner so im sure others can chime n with more tips etc.

Scotman...I'm really digging the detail in your images. I was just looking at the images from the Nikon D40 review from dpreview.com and the detail is similar. Very striking.
My Gf just bought me a Canon XTi for my birthday, which I love and I am very greatful for but I am CONSTANTLY blown away by Nikon images. There is just something so organic about the colors and image quality.

Great shots. You're motivating me to get out with my D50. And to go to the Bronx Zoo. 6 years here and never been.

scotman...I'll definitely post something this weekend. I just got my camera last weekend and have only had time to shoot my dog, my kitchen table, my gf, etc. today, from B&H, I get my 70-200mm 4.0L lens and my 50mm im psyched. So, I am taking the camera out all weekend and will post for sure!
Rick
PS that b& white photo is exceptional.
PPS You using a tripod or mostly handheld?

scotman....sorry to keep you waiting. I brought my camera and my brand spanking NEW lens out the other day to take some nice shots of a local waterfall. Well, I bust out the tripod. My girlfriend left the quick release plate on HER camera. Doh!
Secondly, and more stupid yet, I was playing around with the camera the night before (shots of my dog, a book, a chair, stupid stuff etc.) and realized, after I hiked to the falls mind you, I left my 4 gig Compact Flash card in my printer. Double D'oh! I was soooo P-Oed.
But, since I have no time during the week these days I am definitely bringing it with me this weekend. My GF and I are housesitting and using this as an opportunity to relax by the pool for a few days...So, I will DEFINITELY have some shots by the end of the weekend!
If I wasn't too scared of not being allowed into the stadium, I'd bring my camera to the Yankee game on Saturday. Hmmm...we'll see.....
