Rather than taking my Pelican hard case, I was looking for a backpack that is carry-on legal for a trip to Indonesia.

Anyone know of any that fit the HVX and can be carried on the plane?

Thanks,
Jason

http://tamrac.com/

They make a ton of padded backbacks for photographers, try one of their larger packs ( for medium formatt cameras and lenses) anyways on their site it says what backpacks are carry-on OK! also inner and outer measurements are provide. BH photo sells the packs as well.

the kata bp-207 is a good one. a lot of the tamrac bags aren't deep enough for the hvx. the kata bag has the perfect depth as well as a laptop sleeve.

I'm looking at a 15lb weight restriction and 45" dimension restriction for the international leg of my flight.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check them out. If anyone else has experience (flying international inparticular) with backpacks for the HVX as carry-on's, I'd appreciate it.

Later,
Jason

Get the Kata MC 61 and get the optional wheels. I have traveled around the world with it and found it to be the perfect carry on bag. I usually carry my 17" apple lap top, an external drive, the HVX, external mic, chrosziel FF, petroff matte box, various cables, i pod, passport, Barry 's book, batteries, and various chargers. You also have straps to attach you tripod. It has tones of pockets, 2 side drawers and the inside is completely modular.

I got the crumpler: It life time warranty. It water proof. It funky . it cool. It even has a build in mesh case, so that you can take it out when you are not carrying your camera and just only using your bagpack. There are 3 sizes. but the (Pyjama Pride L) and (Zoomiverse XL) fits best for a HVX. go here:

I ended up going with the CB20. JDS mentioned he carried it on airplanes. I checked with my international airline on their carry-on restrictions and then called Cinebags just to confirm the size, etc.

So, that's the one I went with. 130 bucks from b&h, so...

Thanks for the responses guys. A backpack is going to help me since I will also be carrying a baby in my arms. Plus, once I get there, it'll be easier to carry the hvx and stuff in the backpack around different places.

SomewhereinLA: The Kata MC 61 very much looks like the one I got for free with my HVX package (it comes with a nice P2 logo on the front). (Note: I'm in Europe, this freebee may not be part of the HVX pack in the US.)

I'm curious as to how you get all this to fit in the bag (especially the mattebox). Do you mind posting a few pics? Thanks in advance.

I just got the Ty Video 2 bag, and it's almost the same size as my carry on luggage.
Here's some pics comparing the 2.

Sorry about the camera phone pics

Bag dimensions:
19.5"h x 15"w x 10.5"d
Weight:
6.2lbs/2.81Kg
Volume:
3000 Cu.In/49.16 L

I don't have a HVX200 yet, but i'll post up a mini review with good pics when I get all my stuff in.

In case some haven't seen the pics of the inside here are some.
The bag can hold 2 video camera setups and a DSLR. Also on the outside of the bag is a zipper section with padding for laptop, fits up to most 17" laptops.

man that bag is just about perfect - way less bulky than the kata that i love so much!
BUT i soooo wish they would offer something other than that "skate fairy" liner!!!

i do a lot of work in the oilfields and if i opened my "backpack" and it said skate fairly all over the inside they would either kick my ass or laugh me off the wellsite.

lolz, the Ty Video 1 is all black on the inside, but it's smaller I heard. Maybe you can line the inside with your own material, or try contacting Ogio to see if they offer the Ty Video 2 without the skatefairy all over print.
I'm really excited about using this bag. My 14" laptop fits excellent in it, and it has a strap to hold in it. and the bag is a lot deeper than it seems it would be. The size and shape are just about perfect, and you should easily be able to use it as carry on. Having the option of using 2 camera setups in this bag is increble too.

I have taken some photo's with the bag loaded up ready to go ride bmx. DVX100B, Nikon D70s, the compartment below the SLR is for lenses and I have used it before just dont have any avaliable lenses right now. The bottom compartment can be used for anything. There is so much room in this bag. I though this might give you an idea for the bag. i have also tried different configurations and they work but this is the one most effective. I ride bmx and I dont really care to much about the skate fairy thing either, poor choice by ogio, but oh well. Can't really notice it that much unless you really look at it. LOL. But let me tell you when I am pedaling around the bag is solid and the camera does not move at all and most everything else in the bag stays in its place, except small movements by things that arent compartment fitted. But all things stay in their own compartments. The tripod holder on the side is also useful. I use it for my wireless speed light when I am taking photos. There are many more things that I could fit in this bag. None of the other compartments on the outside are filled. This is the ideal bag to have. Purely Amazing.

And dont mind that crappy resolution on the camera. Shot it with a cheap-o.

I have the Kata KB-207 and have just returned from an overseas trip with it. It's a great backpack and fits nicely around the body, specially for my action sports commuting need ( I ski steep&deep stuff with the pack and tripod attached). It's not under spec for carry-on but will fit all overhead bins and under seats EXCEPT on the CRJs (Canadair Regional Jet). I do have to remove Barry's Book and my 15" Laptop to slim it down a bit.

As far as Airlines limitations goes, I've never had any problems and I was carrying a Lowe AW Trekker 45+lbs pack with an HVX and a 200' mag loaded 16mm camera (Eclair ACL) with it's viewfinder, sunshade, T-Bar, Tele Lens and Lightmeter. Just be Low-Key at check in and upon boarding and everything should be all good.

*** If you're flying a CRJ, slide the bag under the front seat as much as possible, fasten your seatbelt, pick up the magazine, cross a leg and whistle while pretending to read and the flight attendants won't notice a thing when they cross-check prior to take off ;)

Hi, The kata CC-193 bag fits rather well and its size allows it to fit in the overhead lockers as carry on luggage, check this linkhttp://www.kata-bags.com/Item.asp?pid=283&perentId=1&ProdLine=1

Thanks for the feedback, but I'm leaving tomorrow :) I got a Cinebags CB20, I think it was. Fits what I need it to fit, and since the international legs of the flight have a weight limit on carry-on (15lbs), I can't take much more than my HVX, 4 p2 cards, 7 batteries, and the Panny charger that comes with the camera.... It's just under 15lbs, with the bag, so.... Looks like that's what I'm taking. I'm taking my dvmultirigpro in my daughters diaper bag (she is going with me).

Anyways, later.

I just received my Ty Video 2 and I am happy with it.... BUT; my 17" Macbook Pro won't fit in it (especially with the tucano second skin neoprene sleeve around it).

So now I will have to take a 15" Macbook Pro or Powerbook with me instead
. Too bad!

So it definetly won't fit without the sleeve?

So a 17" Macbook Pro or Powerbook will fit in, but just not in the designated sleeve.

I just loaded up my Ty 2 yesterday, you can fit a lot of stuff in there. 2 full video camera setups with all the accesories for both, plus I have a 14" laptop in there too.

Well it fits in without the sleeve, but it is rather very short.

The 17" Powerbook is a bit thicker than the 17" Macbook Pro.

so it fits without a sleeve but not with it

Ah, gotcha. I must've misread, I thought you meant it didn't fit at all.

i have always had to pay extra when flying. the rule is 1 carry on and a camera ,there is no limit to camera size so i fill up my carry on camera bag with important heavy items i can,t be without. then slide my hvx200 in to the water housing (heavy) and then check 2 bags. you pay huge for the over 50lb per bag up to 70lb but this keeps the camera with you and sneiks about 35 lb on the plane free. always snap a pic of your luggage with your phone in line before you check your bags . even better is all the crap before you pack.

Im not sure if snapping a pic really would work, but I do the same. I also make sure that I tell the person at check in that I'm traveling with a camera, and make sure that they respond and I get the name. I sometimes even show it to them. I then open the case right there at the baggage belt in front of people to make certain that it is all there right then. Knock on wood, I have not had anything stolen in transit but I know of a half a dozen people that have, including a good friend that had his DVX stolen from his pelican by someone working for the airlines or security. The airlines wanted him to prove that he had checked it. He couldn't "prove" it was stolen within the baggage care, so he was denied his claim. He filled out a police report and his own insurance covered it. Just a little side note. So carrying the camera is always a good idea.
...and locks are of course useless, I travel quite a bit and I've gotten luggage back minus my lock 5 or 6 times. They just take it, or they forget to put it back on. Also, mind carefully which airlines you fly. Certain Discount Airlines have fine print that explains that they do not guarantee your luggage. I had a long fight with an airline that lost my luggage and didn't care, and there was nothing I could do. That airline has since changed names since their reputation was so bad, not a good Value for sure!
