I own the 3221 Wilderness Systems tripod with 501 head and can't stand the fact that it doesn't have a ball head for leveling. So, I'm looking at the 351MVB2 with either the 501 or 503 head. Any suggestions on why I should pay $100 more for the 503 head? I really don't know the difference between these two, so if anyone can give me a few pointers, that would be great.
Thanks!

What's nice about the 503 is the counter balance spring. It keeps your camera from wanting to nose dive when you take your hand off the pan handle.

yes, our friend with the two legged horse makes a good point. If you have any attachments to your camera like: a matte box, camera light or LCD monitor, you want the 503. It prevents attachments from getting knocked around if your head isn't locked down tight. I have the 501 and it is a great head for the DVX (both are) in retrospect though , I with I had gone with the 503.

I just bought those sticks with the 501 head last week and I find it very adequate. Then again, I only have an external mic attached and do not plan to add any other attachments.

I had the same question when buying my setup 2 years ago. No question - go for the 503. In addition to the the counterbalance - which makes a big difference - the 503 is a true fluid head in that there are 2 plates separated by a viscous liquid, which is contained in sealed unit. The 501 is only fluid-like in that it has 2 friction plates, but with a bit of lubrication between them. Many users report that the 501 sticks a little, especially at the beginning of the move.

the spec of the new 501hdv is quite similar to the 503. maybe that might be an option for you. It has the counter balance spring too.
