Can anyone enlighten me on why I should have a mixer in my editing room

to have multiple ins and outs with varying levels.
I have 4 ins from a beta deck, 2 ins from a dvd player and an input for voice overs... the booth is just next door.
Then I have 4 outs for the avid. It all goes though the mixer.

i use mine to control various audio source levels to my studio monitors (dvd player, computer, decks, tv, etc) not to mention for recording - IF You do VO or music work
