thinking of getting a canon still camera for taking stills, but also to tide me over with video until i get a proper dvx like camera.
i was looking at the tx1 which seems most up to the video job, but also the G7 which has a nice large sensor that might give a nice shallow DOF
any thoughts on using still cameras at any level of video production would be appreciated! also i'm not set-in-stone with canon either, how do the pana still cameras stand up?
cheers
edit: one last thing, what kind of lattitude do these cameras have? the same they have in still mode? or not so good?

I just got a Lumix LX2. This is made by panasonic.
It's an awesome cam, that has a great "motion picture mode". The lense is super-wide, and shoots 848 x 480 along with 1280 x 720 ! The 720 mode is only 15 fps, but it's really detailed. A 4GB memory card is good for 20 continuous minutes shooting.
I bought this still camera for the movie mode, manual controls, and flash controls.

I have a little Canon Elph which I shoot some video with. The canon video is avi and pretty high quality but the problem I have with it is when pointed towards bright lights it causes vertical light bars on the video. My brother has the same problem with his sanyo. Make sure you can try the different cameras in video mode before buying.

The PowerShot S5 IS has a great movie mode too. Like the TX1 but with no 720p. I have shot a lot of video with my Canon PowerShot A620. And I really was impressed with the quality. Then I tried the S3 IS, it was even better.
S5 or S3 IS I would say. Possibly the TX1, but the 720p's not worth it. It's got no more vertical detail than 480p. The LX2 is good, but it's only 15fps and has more vertical smearing.
You should go to DCResource or DPReview and look at the movie mode section of each review.
