I would shop around a little more...that price to me is steep. I got a D70s from them 2 months ago for 750.00. Personally..i don't care too much for the new lenses since they are not made in Japan anymore but Thailand. In fact I am using my older nikon primes because the pix quality is much better due to the glass. But it is all done in manual mode. My next purchase would be the D200 body only.

Also from an article : As with the D40 the D40X doesn't have an built-in focus drive motor which means it can auto focus only with lenses which have their own drive motor (AF-S and AF-I lenses). The lack of a drive motor can be seen by the missing mechanical focus drive pin on the lens mount .

Have you considered the Canon 30D? I have one using the 17-85 IS Lens and can tell you it is a great camera. I am absolutely amazed at the low noise of ISO up to 1600.

Used might be difficult. It is relatively new and anyone that has one will probably not want to get rid of it..what for? The next step is the 5D and 1D cameras which are going to be $5000 plus. The 17-85 IS lens is very sweet. Extremely good multipurpose glass. I paid $1600 CND for my 30D and 17-85 lens. Personally I think this camera is bare minimum for professional use. It is extremely good value!

what would you think a good dslr would be for learning photography,i need one that i could grow into, but my budget is around $800,i was thinking of the d40x but some lens wont fit,the xti looks good but poeple say its not very comoftable

Why focus on a DSLR if you are learning and only have a budget of $800? I would be tempted to get the best of line point and shoot. I prefer Canon so I would suggest the Canon G7. You can add a TTL flash to the Powershot line. By choosing the best point and shoot you will always have a great second camera and one that is much more portable than a DSLR. I always have a camera with me no matter where I go or where I am.
A cheaper DSLR will end up on a shelf somewhere because if you are really an avid photographer you WILL very quickly grow out of it!
