I run 3 monitors on my video editing rig: two 18" LCD's and a single 20" LCD.
I'd say if you could get the side two monitors to match (at least in size), you'd be fine. Having the center monitor larger (as I do) really isn't distracting at all.
Even if the monitors are all different sizes, I'd still go for it, as I find dual monitors annoying -- you can't center them both on your desk without finding yourself looking in between them...

MiniMan, how are you using 3 monitors (if you decided to "take the plunge")?
What video card do you have that allows you to do that. I'm looking to do the same.

You know, the more I edit, the more I like to have everything on one screen. I get my work done faster when everything is concentrated in one spot rather than having to drag stuff across two screens. Might not seem like a big deal, but all those seconds add up. I still use two screens, but generally I edit on one, and then have e-mail, web browser and word processor on the other.

This wouldn't be just for editing. I literally already have 3 monitors, and one of them is sitting around unused.
I usually preview on one monitor and work on the other, but I'd like to have 2 monitors to do work on.

I don't do anything but edit and motion graphics on my workstation. All my other apps are on different computers. I get claustrophobic on one screen.

Let me rephrase:
How did you hook up the 3 monitors? Almost every reasonably priced video card supports 2 max.

Use more than one video card.

Use more than one video card.
Do they need to be matched?

No, and its funny that this thread comes back up, because i was just about to get a cheapo 20 dollar 8400GT and slap it in my machine to run my NTSC Monitor, and my other lcd :-D
EDIT: for anyone crazy enough, XP and Vista support 10 Monitors at the same time :)

Do I understand correctly -- that you have different content on each monitor?? How is that accomplished?

If you have Nvidia cards and matching monitor resolutions, you can run them in whats called dual view, which emulates having one very wide screen monitor, or regular dual monitors, where you can have 2 full screen applications running in separate windows.
Oh and for anyone that wants to upgrade on the cheap

I have two 7800 gt cards and got 3 x 17" LCD and my 7" NTSC Monitor... I have Vegas setup so when i hit play it always uses the NTSC monitor.
I also run a app called UltraMon, it puts a taskbar on all the screens and whatever program is open in each screen is placed on that screens taskbar.

So how do I add a 3rd monitor to my laptop? (PCMCIA slot)
- Mikko ... has a dedicated monitor for DVXuser, with IRC behind.

I use a Dell 24" Widescreen for editing, and then my MBP's 17" screen if I need it.
Both run at 1920x1200. It's a nice setup.
