View Full Version : Adobe Premiere Pro v3.0 beta
You know Adobe has released AE 8.0, PP 3.0 and Soundbooth 3.0 for public beta testing?
If not, go here: http://labs.adobe.com/
good luck! Unfortunately: no native DVCPRO HD in Premiere this year either.

My understanding is that this beta doesn't provide it, but it is in the planned release.
I might be incorrect, but the original PR said p2 support.
And the After Effects version is AE CS3 (v.8.0), not AE 7 which is the current version.

Do you have a link to that Adobe PR where P2 is mentioned?
All I could find was this:
Comprehensive video-format compatibility—Edit all major standard and high-definition formats. Adobe Premiere Pro works with DV, Digital Betacam, HDV, DVCPRO HD, HDCAM, 2K and 4K film scans, and more . You never know what the next project will require, but with Adobe Premiere Pro, you will be ready.

After playing with it a bit, my initial impressions of PPro CS3 Beta is that the slow motion is now up to par but the whole program seems more unstable than ever. It seems to crash all the time and this is just with editing standard DV.

What do you guys mean by P2 support? If CS3 says it supports DVCPRO HD, isn't that the format the HVX200's use?

I think the support is going to be provided via DV Rack Pro HD, (i forget the adobe name they gave to it) via a avi reference to an OMF, much like raylight does.

Adobe Premiere Pro works with DV, Digital Betacam, HDV, DVCPRO HD
that's it - DVCPRO HD

DVCPRO HD support... but does that mean .mxf support?

You should never use a beta release for any crucial work.

I've also noticed that it eats up about another 0.5gb of RAM?
Looking on the Adobe PP CS3 forums it looks like they are working through a lot of bugs and other issues... they have a couple months to get it all working so we'll see.
I am confused by the time remapping feature, though - how the heck do you use this? I can't seem to place a keyframe to make the speed change gradually, and I don't see anything happen when I slide around the velocity bar.
Also - how does timewarp work in that it appears to change the speed of the clip without actually changing the duration???

Adobe will probably provide DVCPRO HD support through OnLocation (the new name for DVRACK HD). I don't think HDV is supported in the beta version due to licensing issues with the codec.

I chatted with Jason Levine, Adobe's evangelist, and he said OnLocation supports DVCPRO HD.
So... what does that mean, really? I don't understand how that works.

On Location is a Windows utility that captures DVCProHD directly to disc out of the FW port of the HVX200.
It was previously owned by Serious Magic and called DV ProHD 2.0
On Location is not included with this beta release. Too bad. I am trying to figure out if it will continue to support the QTAvid format as I plan to continue editing in Avid but want the laptop direct recording functionality of DV Rack.

Okay, so I can capture directly to hard disk, but can I edit it in Premiere?

It would stand to reason that you would. It will ships as part of the Creative package, and I doubt that you could capture DVCProHD with On Location, and then couldn't use Premiere 3.0 to edit it.

Can you capture all of the frame rates with the software, ie, slow-motion?

Vincent, yes I would imagine you can record all the variable frame-rates as long as your hardware is up to spec... although that would really be more of a question for Adobe.
Zillax0rz - yes you should be able to. Premiere does not natively support .mxf file format, but it does support the DVCPRO HD codec. MXF file format is what a P2 card happens to save the DVCPRO HD codec in; onLocation should save it in some format that Premiere recognizes (perhaps even just an .avi).

Does anyone know about this?

In SpeedEDIT you simply hold shift and drag the end of the clip to fill the gap, automatically adjusting the speed. It doesn't change the in/out point this way.
In the control tree you can change the speed without changing the durration, but obviously it will have to change the outpoint.
I don't see how you could have an absolute 5 second clip with specific in/out points, change the speed and not have it effect the time or in/out points?
I think either or has got to change.
I believe the time remapping function is not implemented yet. It's supposed to be a glider bar in the "effects" tab, but it is not. Though I hope it'll work as advertised. I was a bit disappointed with this release... To me it seems the only big news is that they've merged encore with Premiere.

yeah not much new... except that it supports MAC. Now that it's on MAC though, I am guessing CS4 will be a big release...

Yup me neither, yet the timewarp effect seems to do that... which is why I'm confused how that works?
