shot more test footage this weekend with CineFuse 1, a 50mm f/1.2, an ND9 and a polarizer stacked on as well. in addition to experimenting with dof shots, this round's focus was also on wide exterior shots and inducing lens flares.

Zak, those grabs are excellent! I'm downloading the video right now. I HAVE to get me an HV20. Are you using the achromat and the spacer on this one?

Man, that footage is NICE and SHARP. I'm loving this combo. Did you do any color correction?

i just watched the footage. it looked amazing. i can't wait to get my HV20 - may 7th :(
i noticed in the first shot, when you pan up to the sky, it goes from white to grey. did you have the camera in auto exposure?

From what I've read there is no way out of auto exposure...:embarasse yet
Either you control the shutter or the iris...but you'll always have one compensating for the other.

but you can lock the exposure so it doesn't change like that when you're panning from dark to bright. also Zak, do you think we could see some footage of people's faces and movement? i find this the best determinare of the "filmicness".

whew, lots of questions.... i have answers....
1. first shot was from a previous day when I had the camera set to auto exposure. but for everything else, exposure was locked in.
2. the only color correction done was to bring the blacks down to zero. maybe a touch below that to crush them. added a 2.35:1 matte. no color grading.
3. not in cinemode. i'm in TV mode so i can lock in the shutter speed (1/48). yes, you can do both manual exposure and shutter.
4. achromat yes, spacer no.
5. music is "Circle" by Jon Hopkins.
6. people's faces? right here -> TEST 2 (http://www.sabipictures.com/heartofnow/vx/HV20Brevis_test2.mov)

Thanks for the repply, Zak. What program are you using that lets you get a numeral value of black?
Zak Forsman

Final Cut Pro 5.1 / Kona 3. when I refer to 'zero', i'm refering to FCP's built-in waveform monitor.

that looked more filmic than most of the stuff i've seen with the HVX and various 35mm adapters.... i wonder if it's the HV20 or the Brevis?? or maybe it's just you :)
what do you think?

Nice footage, Forsman.
Any high-res stills or video? Very light combo huh? Great for handheld?

I keep saying the HV20 and the brevis feel like they belong together. It's like they were actually built to go with one another.

kholi, yes. a more substantial camera would cause fatigue, i'm sure. but this combo is so light, you could shoot handheld all day. no prob. the camera is actually about half the weight of the brevis35, if that. so i find i'm actually cradling the two in one hand, favoring the brevis for support, and pulling focus with the other hand (and wishing I had a third to adjust the LCD's viewing angle as i shoot). I do need an inverted monitor though. shooting upside down is a pain.; I know about the HV20 hack, and managed to break the switch. so flip is now permanently disabled on mine:(

I would tend to agree. That little combo with the proper rails is really sweet. There is no reason why you can't get VERY filmic results from the HV20 and a Brevis with good still lenses.

Let me tell you, after being on my feet all day demonstrating a product at NAB, coming home and having a beer and watching this video is a treat. Good feel to it. Thanks.

wonderful footage dude :) i want to see the rig to ^^ wich lenses did you use and wich mode on the camera? shutterspeed and so one..

the rig is exactly what you'd imagine the HV20 and Brevis look like when screwed together. the only pic i have, my girlfriend took while I was shooting the footage in TEST 3. in this i'm shooting backwards, over my shoulder, so I could see the image in the LCD right side up. not much of a solution and I quickly abandoned this method.

Are you using the Nikkor 50mm 1.2 AI OR AIS? I have a Nikon D200 and have been scoping out that prime for a while now. I could kill two birds with one stone buying it. Are you shooting with your aperture wide open at all?
Zak Forsman
04-20-2007, 11:54 AM
it's the AIS model and yes, I was shooting wide open. stacked an ND.9 and a polarizer on the front.
