necessary hardware for editing hd video

Can anyone please give me a brief summary of what they would recommend for computer hardware using Vegas 7.0 - editing hd video with my hv20. I've read that with about 2gb of ram, and a core 2 it still lags a bit (no specifications of mother board and video card) .... I'm going to so a complete build, and if anyone has the experiance of editing Hd content, and speeds through it, please let me know. I just can't trust the idiots at fry's.

Not sure of the comparison with FCP but Apple recommends 2gb for editing compressed HD and SD, and 4gb for editing uncompressed HD.

Vegas does not rely on the video card/GPU for anything at all, so don't factor that into your equation.
