View Full Version : Panasonic Press Conference today - P2 price and timing + NEW HVX200?

Hey, here it' is! Today not only Apple FCP but Panasonic Press Conf too.
I've got from Pana site press releases:

LAS VEGAS, NV (April 15, 2007) – Panasonic announced today pricing on the new 16GB and the forthcoming 32GB P2 card for its popular line of solid-state P2 HD and P2 camcorders and recorders. The 16 GB P2 card, which will be available in May at a suggested list price of $900, doubles the current 8GB solid-state memory card.

The 32GB P2 card, which will be available before year’s end at a price of $1,800, will result in Panasonic being able to quadruple the storage capacity of its P2 card this year.

“Dramatic recording time improvement is another beauty of P2 HD technology. The new 16GB card doubles capacity at a significantly lower cost of storage per gigabyte,” said Robert Harris, Vice President of Marketing, Panasonic Broadcast. “And the 32 GB P2 card will again double that by the end of the year, providing the extra long record times producers request for projects like wildlife documentaries. New P2 cards offer recording capacity equal to and often longer than tape-based and disc-based media.”

The new P2 cards offer comparable recording capacity to tape-based and disc-based media, but with
no-moving-parts reliability and the benefits of an IT file-based workflow. With a five-slot AJ-HPX2000 P2 HD camcorder, a video pro using five 16GB P2 cards can record for up to 200 minutes at native 720/24pN in DVCPRO HD, 80 minutes in 1080i/720p in DVCPRO HD, and 160 minutes in DVCPRO 50.

The 16 GB P2 card will work immediately with new AG-HVX200 and AG-HPX500 P2 HD camcorders purchased from May 2007 forward. Existing P2 and P2 HD products will need a free, downloadable software upgrade available on the Panasonic website (www.panasonic.com/broadcast) after May. Customers can visit the website for updates on additional upgrades and availability.

They mean cameras purchased in May 2007 and later. Cameras like mine purchased in Feb 2006 need a firmware upgrade I would assume.

Sure N8ture,
it means new as delivered by Pana to distributors and dealers after May 1...sorry.

I've edited the post but can't change the title...no I did!

Am I right that there has been no increase in P2 Store capacity, and no drop in price? That seems ridiculous with the new cards and new prices, and really limits it's usefulness.

no low end stuff

So does this mean no DVX100 replacement, or could that come another day during NAB?

Then again what could they even replace a DVX100 with? If they made another P2 HD camera it would defeat the purpose of the HVX.

04-15-2007, 07:43 PM
I have a feeling we won't see any new DVX100.

04-15-2007, 09:25 PM
Guys, there isn't going to be a new DVX100; this company is all about HD, all HD all the time, they've rebranded P2 as P2HD. I doubt there will ever be another new SD camera from Panasonic ever.

16GB cards are available in May, at $900 MSRP. HVXs manufactured before May 2007 will need a firmware update to use 'em.

No news or otherwise on the P2 Store. Lots of talk about the P2 Gear, which can take external hard disks and offload cards to. But I don't think it's really a P2 Store replacement.

Biggest disappointment is still no MXF editing from FCP...

What?!? How hard is it to do this???

Ah well.

Is there any truth to the 1800 dollars for 32 gig cards? 900 for 16 is pretty dang beautiful though.

I'm in heaven...

looks like they plan to keep the dvx around for a while yet.

when's the next expo that they might release a new prosumer?

That is what was announced, yes. And they're due in November.

That was the shocker -- everyone was expecting $1600 or so, and they're nearly half that...

I read in a trade magazine a few months ago that Panasonic was going to release a new HVX200 camera where it will have interchangeable lenses. Anyone heard about that yet? That same article I read also mentioned the HPX500 and said both cameras would be available sometime in 2007.

Any news on lower prices for the 8 and 4 cards ?

I am curious, fullcompass, bh and even panasonic itself is showing a list price of $700 for the 8gb, does this mean there is agoing to be another price drop to $600 for that card? if so, how does everyong think it may be before this happens?

I am thinking on holding off big time since everything shifting so much before purchasing my second 8gb card. I mean, even auctions (not straight buy it nows) are going for 700 and up, which i dont get unless you need a card asap for production. otherwise, eventually ebay is going to shift as well, and I am hoping to get a 8gb card for under 600. I did not know if this 600 list price is defined for november (when 32 comes out) but they show it discontinued then so I am not sure.

PS, 4gb cards have been discontinued, check out the chart that is on one of the posts somehwere in the news section

I'm sure we're all watching to see what happens with the two 4gig cars going for 300 on ebay right now... If not forget I said anything.

i have all the current p2 auctions being watched, i cant beleive what some are bidding

04-18-2007, 08:08 AM
Wow, I was not expecting the 16gb cards to be so inexpensive. I expected them to be at least $1200. I might buy two :) That will be quite the improvement over my current 4gb card.

Thanks Dan, I was unaware of this.

Can anyone tell me the life/hours of the battery the HVX comes with?

04-18-2007, 11:00 PM
About 3.5 hours.
