I have to confirm this info at the panny booth when the expo floor opens but according to a panny presenter p2 card prices are as follows:
4 gig - discontinued
8 gig - about 600
16 gig - about 900
32 gig - about 1300 (when they come out)
this seems amazing to me so we will see if it is true

Sweet, much better prices. The 8gb $600 card is already available on BandH.
Though I think someone needs to come out with a device which I can just pop 50$ 4 gb flash cards onto.

What? Sixteen gigs at 900? that's nuts.
It's $679 at B&H, not $600. If the price is going to lower even more to $600 when the 16gb cards come in and if they do come in at $900 that's going to be incredible!
This will certainly help even more people jump on the HVX bandwagon! 8GB for ~$1200 was getting pretty ridiculous; now it's a lot more palatable.

Some crazy prices on this gear, I'm gonna buy a ton of 4 gig cards, I actually like having to dump the 4 gig's better than the 8 gigs. It lets me monitor the footage in smaller chunks when I'm shooting and if a problem comes up I havent shot too much to go back.

4's are discontinued. 8's dropped to $700 MSRP. 16's are $900 MSRP. Street price on both will likely be a little bit lower, but not a lot lower, apparently margins are very tight.
I thought they said $1800 on the 32GB cards though. They're only seven months away! They said 32GB cards in November.

16gig at 900 bucks, cool man...

so the hvx needs an update to handle the 16GB (is that cause they use 4 x 4GB sdhc)
will they add any other new features, the case would stay the same, but they could add more gamma and framerate modes couldn't they?

They shouldn't retire the 4gb card production wise they should pack one with every hvx from here on out and just not sell retail, that'd be awesome.

This is the roadmap w/prices, the 4gb is now phased out (see how the dashed line stops). :)
I want me some 16gb P2 action.

I wonder if the new Sony Express cards might have got panny to drop the prices?
Of course Panasonic has to drop the prices.

I thought that the P2 cards used a PCMCIA interface that all notebooks have?
Jason Ramsey

Not all notebooks have them. A lot of them are moving to expresscard. There are several pc's that have both. Mac moved to expresscard. There is an expresscard --> PCMCIA adapter though, for those who only have expresscard.

I doubt Sony's product had any influence on it; I'd say it's more likely the influence of Fox, Australia's ABC, India's NDTV, Raycom, Media General, Cox, and all the other mass adopters of P2. These organizations are using thousands and thousands of P2 products, and these are big massive organizations. It's not just us individual users, it's networks and groups of stations, all buying these cards and all demanding lower prices.
Plus, apparently Hoodman really is going to produce a cheap knockoff P2 card! It can only get faster, better, and cheaper for the end users.

That's a huge drop from last time I checked. Because I'm lazy, what's the ballpark price for the readers?

What about us in the UK don't the BBC use P2?

Could somebody post any links to these kind of adapters?
Or even better: cheap pc-card->usb adapter that could be used either with laptop or desktop.
I'll have to change my old powerbook to mbp very soon...

There will likely never be a "cheap" USB adapter. But there is a cheap expresscard adapter, and a cheap PCI-bus adapter. There are non-cheap USB and FW800 adapters.

It is supposed to be released when the 16gig cards come out.

Thanks. I guess the only other concern will be; can the pcmcia drive of your computer handle the increased card size? Or the duel systems adapter for that matter. Many of the HP notebooks had TI drives that couldn't even handle the 8G.
I am a little dissapointed that Panasonic still hasn't adressed this with their own adapter. We shouldn't need to use the camera as the primary offloading device and the P2 store is cost prohibitive especially if you do not require its functionality.

Its good that P2 prices are falling but I'm still in the hunt for 4gig cards. I'm sure rental houses will eventually sell them. I guess a good price would be half of what an 8 cost now; even used.

If 32 gigs will be $1,300, then the AJ-PCS060G 60 GB Portable Hard Drive doesn't make sense at $1,500... it can't even fit two 32 gig cards.

Tom James, a Panasonic representative, said during a demonstration here in Hawaii the other year that the P2 Store was only a stop-gap measure until the P2 cards grew in capacity.
Barry_Green
04-21-2007, 09:46 AM
I haven't heard any Panasonic rep say that, but it seems obvious to me. Why bother with a P2 Store, when you can have six hours of recording time in-camera? P2 Store makes sense when card capacities are tiny; for the 4GB cards it was very useful. But with 32GB cards -- what do you need a P2 Store for? Heck, two 32GB cards gets you a long, long, long way towards having the full capacity of a FireStore.
I think the P2 Store is likely never going to be updated. As card capacities grow, it becomes less relevant.

I am confused, will there be other devices needed to work with 16GB and 32GB cards besides what is already included in our < 8GB work flow? Or just the firmware?
Shadow
04-22-2007, 02:20 PM
You will need an upgrade firmware for your HVX200 to use the 16GB and 32GB cards. You will be able to download it on the Panasonic website sometime in June.
David Jimerson
04-22-2007, 02:29 PM
May, to coincide with the release of the cards. All HVXs made after that will have the firmware pre-installed.

I'm clearly out of the loop. Are 16 gigers being sold now? For that matter, how are 16 gigers going to be $900 when 8 gigers are $600. Why would anyone buy an 8 gig in such a case? In all previous upgrades, you actually paid more per gig for higher recording times (4 gigs cost more than twice as much as 2 gigers, 8 gigers same vs. 4 gigers).
Barry_Green

I've sent them a laundry list of items I'd like to see included. But I'm not counting on there being any other changes other than the firmware update to use the cards.

why wouldn't they have a 240 gig p2 store? it's just a notebook harddrive inside.. in fact, i heard that you could switch out the hard drive yourself (i know you're not supposed to) with a screw driver and some kind of installer program.

Honestly David, I though about so many, then I read three times more that I didn't think of from other members, then I read about some really neat ideas that Barry came up with, more threads popped up, more ideas came to life every day.
I remember I once wrote down a little list of what I though were the most requested and better ones... But at this point I just want them to do something, no matter if it isn't the best options...
There is a boat load of extra power and versatility being held within the HVX.
While I'd prefer someone like you or Barry to choose what these were, I'd honestly be happy with any three things that any of us asked for, even if they came from someone with even less technical know-how than me! lol
I'm only looking for a token of appreciation from all the good lip I (we) put out there for Panny. Because as much as I am very happy, it is waaaay too easy for them to throw us a bone without taking away from the features in the next camera they will have to design.
16GB cards are late, not based on their schedule, but on mine and that of most users here. I keep looking at my CML emails together with my daily cup of DVXuser and I can't help but feel that the cards were way too late...
David Jimerson

I haven't heard of anything other than the update to card sizes, so probably not too much more happening this go-around. But I guess we won't know for sure until next month.

. . . and for those of us who have owned and been using one (happily) for the past year the benefits of a reliable small portable, ruggedized, device to dump cards to in the field where AC power is unavailable does not go away with the introduction of larger P2 cards.
I love to hear from anyone capable of making this happen . . .
Seems like a no-brainer.

It's a fair point. If it was adequate for what you were doing up until now, why is it inadequate now? If you dump three 16 GB cards and leave two full, you've got an hour and 20 minutes of 1080 or two hours and 40 minutes of 720p/24pN -- all with one P2 Store.

64's should be roughly end of 2008, 128's ballpark in at roughly end of 2009.
