I wanted to know how to achieve this effect.
When they shoot something and then reverse the clip in post, but still have the lyrics synced.
There have been a couple of music videos that have done this well...can't think of them right now.
Does the artist just have to learn the song backwards 'phonetically', record that and just reverse in post?
I would appreciate if anyone can advise.
and if you know what videos I am talking about, please post the song name and artist.
thank you
Wouldn't you just reverse the song - have the actor memorize it and shoot.
Is that right? My head hurts.

Here's some examples
Coldplay-The Scientist

Pharcyde-Drop

Mute Math-Chaos (this has forward and reverse)

Jack Johnson-Sitting, Waiting

after a little research (and especially watching both speeds of Mute Math, link above) it seems my conclusion is what I originally thought...having the artist memorize the song backwards 'phonetically'
thanks for responding tmnt
There's a video in the first issue of WHOLPHIN (a wonderful DVD journal -- see www.wholphindvd.com ) that is of a guy who sang "Stairway to Heaven" backwards, with the video played in reverse. So, you're hearing the song correctly (starting at the beginning, ending at the end) but all of the action in the video is in reverse. An amazing feat! (Not the video, but the guy's unusual talent.)
Is that what you're talking about? I.e., in the finished video the song will play normally, but all of the action on screen is reversed? Can't think of any other way but having the talent lypsynch to a reverse playback during shooting.
There aren't that many phonemes, actually, so it's not as hard as you might think, provided you don't do too many close ups. :D

I think the director who first did this was Spike Jonze .
