Here are some shots done with the HV20, Brevis35 (CF1), 50mm Minolata f1.4 lens (f2.8 to f5), using our mattebox with a 4x4 ND .9, and polarizer in place. It was extremely bright..full sunshine, ice, and new snow. Looking at tape data during capture, the HV20 was using f4.6 to f5.2.

Clips were captured using HDVsplit, and 2:3 pullown removal done in AE7.0 The 2:3 pulldown took a long time in AE, but it was worth it!

720p (24fps)...107MB wmv (http://www.cinevate.com/images/brevisonice.wmv)

24fps, 620x360, 48MB, mov (www.cinevate.com/images/brevisonice.mov)

Jesus Christ! It's like the HV20 was built to go with the brevis!

Wow that is magnificent. How much color correction was done, specifically the shots with people in them?

Thanks for sharing.

Pretty amazing, Dennis. I should be getting together with Michael Schoenfeld and testing the combo again this afternoon. I guess he got the new HD achromat so I'm gonna see what I can do.

Good stuff!

No cc at all in those clips. I boosted brightness in two of the shots (looking out over ice), but everything else is 100% from the cam. The 4x4 polarizer I used gives the sky a nice blue gradient as the relative solar angle changes and certainly cuts a lot of glare. Even in bright sun, I was OK with the HV20's little LCD using the focus assist to set up each focus rack.

Elton, I'm curious as to how lens-centric the image capture is in that HV20 you guys are playing with. This one has at least a 5% skew to the left. I'm sure you've figured out how to lock in shutter/aperture in TV mode by now :-)

Wow! That was very impressive!

Dennis, it seems to me that you are more comfortable posting HV20 samples than A1 samples. Is it because of the CA problem you have with A1 or the real 24p mode that HV20 has or maybe something else?

The blue fringing issue with XHA1 footage is exactly why you haven't seen a lot of outdoor footage posted from it! The HV20 footage is cleaner IMHO. When posting adapter footage it's very important to me that it's representative of the adapter without adding optical or chromatic aberrations from the host camera.

Both HV20 and XHA1 produce similar quality 24p/24f footage, and for me, the XHA1 24f is a lot easier to deal with as pull down removal is not required. It's also a much nicer camera to shoot with. But the blue/yellow fringing ....

The other big reason you haven't seen a ton of A1 footage is that it just warmed up here after a winter that was not only frigid cold, but also crazy busy for us. The HV20 happened to arrive just before Easter weekend....the first few days that I've taken off in months. We're down to lead times of about 10 days on orders, and in another week or so, it'll be 24 hours.

Did you have any chance to compare the video in low light with your adapter attached. Does HV20 show noise in low light or maybe with CF3? The reason I am asking this is if it doesn't have any problems in low light, HV20 and Brevis35 HD bundle is a killer. Your videos look amazing.

Also did you try Cineform's Connect HD for pulldown removal? It can remove the pulldown while capturing.

No, in low light I haven't done comparisons...although I'd expect the A1 to be much more sensitive. I am curious on noise levels between the two cameras and will be doing a few tests there for sure.

I don't use any of the Cineform products (yet) so I removed pulldown in AE and worked with uncompressed files. I'm currently doing some research on a complete capture/codec hardware based solution for our shop and perhaps NAB will have some new announcements in that regard.

hows the flip module coming?

The first prototype project was scrapped last month, and the new design is complete. Production volumes should be reached in 4 weeks or so. Our goal has alway been to have a modular unit with perfect XYZ alignment, low light loss and universal (meaning usable on all other adapters) design :-) Price target is still sub $300.

i love you?

please dont take that the wrong way, i have a beautiful girlfriend who is sleeping to my left right now but....

I keep having these nightmares about waking up in bed, turning to my wife, and seeing instead a carbon fibre tube with a nikon lens on the end ... I hope this never happens to you

It's not super cheap, but check out the new AJA I/O HD.

Dennis, this footage looks awesome! How were you monitoring? Was it hard to get accurate focus on the HV20 LCD, or were you using an external monitor?

Dennis Wood
04-28-2007, 12:38 AM
That was 100% HV20 LCD :-) Using focus assist before recording, and a follow focus to set focus points, I had no problem with the HV20 LCD, even in bright sunlight.

Hey Dennis this got posted over at the RED forum, which is how I came to see it. I think the footage looks remarkable for $1K camera.

Do you have any photos of what this setup looks like put together? I'm kind of curiuos to see how big the whole setup is with the adapter fixed onto such a small camera.

Hey Dennis

just bought/paypal'd a Brevis unit from your site mainly because I can't find anyone who doesn't LOVE theirs and because you seem like a freaking great guy.

I'll be using it on a test shoot for a feature in a few weeks if I can get the unit in time. I'll try to let you know if I can steal some screen grabs/shot to show on here.

BTW, your post about your nightmare cracked me up.

Tom, I'll have to check out that post over at the RED forum. Bruiser, you'll like the adapter/HV20 combination, but make sure you've got the exposure "locking" workaround figured out before you start shooting. Finally, thanks rs for posting the link to the pics. I'll be doing some neat stuff with the HV20 and adapter mounted to a full suspension mtb this week :-)
