I am curious what are some of the different coverages everyone is using for their equipment. I have listed some questions below and thanks in advance!

1. How much coverage to do you have?
2. What is the annual cost?
3. What kind of deductible do you have?
4. What exactly does this cover?

I am also looking for some reputable companies to go through for equipment insurance, so feel free to name some. The reason for all the questions is that I am preparing to purchase a HPX500 and I am trying to get all my "ducks in a row". Thanks again!

The problem with insurance threads is that you will alwasy be told to do a search as its been covered before. However when you do the search nearly every thread will say do a search.

Insurance should be one of those things that has a sticky.

I tend to agree, but then again I started this thread. I followed the search link posted, but still didn't find enough info.

Then, perhaps that information isn't available.

hence the responses you've and others have received.

Call your agent, and ask that agent.

hey man, i asked the same question a while ago. i recently found out that my home owners insurance has a seperate policy that will cover my camera OUTSIDE of the home and even if it is used for business purposes.

if you dont like that route you can check out a coupla threads i read that helped me out:

it was like an extra buck or two a month to cover my camera as well on my homeowners policy. in or out of the home.

Be very very very very very careful putting your gear on your homeowners. A lot of homeowner insurance policies would consider an HVX to be a professional camera, thus making it unavailable for coverage. You don't want to assume these things or allow an agent to casually tell you it's covered. When it comes time to place a claim to your insurance, you don't want to have them suddenly tell you that they were mistaken and you weren't covered.

Just be extremely thorough with your agent, so you make sure you are indeed covered.

I have a policy with a separate agency for my production equipment. It's worth the extra few bucks to me to sleep soundly and know my gear is fully covered under all circumstances.

Yep...if you have it covered under your homeowners policy, your insurer will definitely find a way to get out of covering it if they can in any way consider that it is a business tool.

If you're purely a hobbyist, maybe, but still...

actually im covered through my homeowners insurance because im a home business. If I had an office, then yes, homeowners wouldnt cover it.

thats what the woman/agent told me also. i havent got the coverage yet because i'm still researching, but she told me that if its used for business and is stolen or broken by accident that it would be covered. she says its not actually under the homeowners policy but under a seperate a seperate policy, i think its called a home computer policy or something. i'll ask to see it in writing before i sign anything though.

I rent an apartment, so I just looked into seeing if renter's insurance could cover my HVX and editing system. I talked to one company, Assurant, and they said renter's insurance wouldn't cover my equipment adequately, period. No if's, and's or but's. That's as I expected, but I thought I'd throw it out there. They recommended that I go to my yellow pages and find a local, independent insurer that can provide me a commercial policy.

Boy, I would really confirm this with your agent.

This is my situation, and we have to have an additional rider.

The cam warranty doesn't cover theft or accidential damage.

Every ins. policy is different. MAKE SURE you know what yours is/isn't covering. NEVER assume things with insurance companies. If they can get out of paying out the policy they will. Shop around. It makes a big difference.

Our gear used to be covered under our homeowners policy. Then we got a little more gear... we then needed an additional rider. We got a little more gear... we needed a new insurance broker because the old one wouldn't cover the new gear even with a rider.

Its really a tough go when you are bigger than a home policy but smaller than a full on big company. Shop around, we finally went with Lloyds of London who carries policies for the in between sized group that we fit into.
