How do you people deal with it? It seems that when the cam is set to any progressive mode the strobing turns really ugly even with slow pans. Tried adjusting the shutter speed a little but that didnt help.. any advice?

Pan slower, or go 30P instead of 24P... it helps..

I highly recommend reading Barry's book. He starts the book with this very sub ject. You really have to change the way you shoot with progressive if you want to get around the "strobing." While panning, follow an object in the center of the screen. For example, follow a car passing by. The car will be fine, but the background will "strobe." However, your eye is focusing on the car, not the background. After reading Barry's book, I found myself watching movies and seeing the strobing in the background that I never saw before! Seriously, get the book. It saved our butts on our feature!

very true. funny thing is i got the book and forgot about barry's opening chapter. interesting to see that a test was done in comparison with a 16mm camera and 25p strobing performs the very same. So its not video to blame afterall, the hvx is doing what its meant to. interesting..

yep. Just pan slower, or if following a moving object, try to keep it filling as much of the frame as is appropriate for your shot, and keep it in the same part of the shot. This will minimize the *appearance* of strobing.
