Most camera sequences are exported as script files. That is usually text.
These are just text representations of the camera's position. The (x,y,z) coordinates to tell the other program where to position it's camera at each frame. The program converts that information back to binary before processing.
Technically, you could play around with the numbers in a standard text editor if you keep the same text formatting. Most programs have built in script editors for this. In max you can open and edit this script file.
I don't know AE but it probably is looking for a script. e.g, in max the camera tracked script is loaded via the 'Run Script'. (Utilities tab->MaxScript button->Run Script). Or 'Open Script' to edit.
/ Maybe try to find what type of file AE needs and see if max has that file type in the File->Export dialog.
Hope that helps.
