i used noise reduction, exposure, and thats about it. what were your methods Matt, etc.. thanks

Thanks Matt. I was trying to make it look like there was actually a flash that was used so I tried to bring out the subject while keeping the back darker and keep the grain as low as I could... :)

You did better at getting rid of the noise in the background than I did though...

I looked at the channels seperately to see which of those were the noisiest, and blurred them slightly. Apart from that, take a look:

thanks for the psd. ive got one more question. in your psd mat g. there is a background layer that has a bunch of brush strokes through it. any reason for that.

One of the layers has a layer mask with some strokes on it, if that's what you mean. That was to allow part of that layer to sharpen, while painting out the part of that layer I didn't want to affect the bottom layers.
