How to verify serial number?

I'm looking at buying a used Z1U, and the seller is a bit questionable. I have the serial number of the unit- does anyone know how to check whether the warranty is valid, and/or if the unit is stolen? Thanks.

they say the warranty is not transferable to another buyer in any case, however.
