View Full Version : pointless DVX worship!

So i'm working on a pseudo-documentary style video for the SD fire department. I wrote a montage sequence which is used to illustrate quintessential "this is San Diego" shots of various places all over the city. I went down to the beach during a gorgeous sunset, set up my DVX, and shot for about 30 minutes, mostly in 60i since we filmed the rest of the project in 60i. I was really hot to do it in 24p to really show off what it can do, but with all the fast subject motion (firetrucks/firefighters rushing around, etc.) and my lack of camera experience, 60i seemed like a safer bet. What I've found out subsequently is (I think), I could have mixed the two types of footage on one timeline and been just fine, using 24p when appropriate and 60i when appropriate. Lesson learned.

I shot footage of surfers in the waves and the stuff shot in 24p is beautiful, just beautiful. the stuff in 60i is ok, but... there's no point in my post other than this. I knew, and have read about, and have observed the difference in the two different types of footage. but this really hammered it home for me. The 24p footage looked like 16. I am working with a USC film grad on the project (I've only ever worked in digital) and he has always been doubtful about the "film look" from video, but now i FINALLY have the footage that I can show him and say SEE! THIS is what all of us DVX lovers are talking about.

Anyway, just a great personal confirmation of why I bought this camera. Even with HD coming out, I am still glad I got a DVX. What a great tool.

Yea!! Very nice testimony.

I've got 3 DVXs and I love them like they were my own children. I've even given them names :))

Ooohhh now I feel so foolish for waiting for the rebate to expireeee. I was hoping it would go down in price or get reduced somehow - it sucks being on a tight budget >.<

I love my DVX a lot. I got an HVX200 though and I have to say, the HVX does to the DVX what the DVX did to every other camera when it cme out. :( :) ?

They're both very good, but the HVX is definitely sharper, even in SD. I do like the softness of the DVX. But hey, andromedize the DVX and you have an uncompressed HVX with more lattitude.

Post is easier with p2, but for those who like tape, the DVX is king. Backup for HVX200 is a fortune since you're dealing with high bitrate data and no cheap tape.
Actually I'm thinking about selling the DVX, but I have torn feelings about it. I see my psychiastrist on Tuesday. Maybe he can help... I just love that little guy SO much!

yeah I am waiting for the day I can afford an HVX. It gets harder and harder to deny the power of HD every time I see the footage that can be accomplished in the hands of a skilled operator.

Curious- the DVX w/Andromeda conversion gives you more latitude than an HVX? how come?

because, juan is a genious and knows more about the cameras than panasonic. he even said that although hydra will be awesome, the only difference is 2k as opposed to 1556x940 and hasa all the framerate options. however, he says the dvx with andromeda is still going to be king in dynamic range versus the hydra and any other prosumer hd camera out there.
