I've read a couple of times now that at least some of you are expecting price drops after NAB. These expectations seem to be based on prior experience. My question is, for those with such prior experience, whether these price drops has been for NTSC models only or including PAL models as well? And do you think PAL models will go down in price as well after NAB?

Oh yeah, another one: how long after NAB does it normally take until the price drops are effective?

The best deals are at NAB (and for a short while after if you have the have the coupon codes). If you know anyone going and you're trying to get a cam, get them to contact you with the price while they are there....

I must admit I didn't even know NAB existed before reading about it here so I'm completely clueless about it. Since NAB's in NTSC land, would it be likely to find any good PAL deals there?

The European version of NAB is IBC. There won't be much PAL activity at the US NAB show.

..Which apparently isn't until September. So does this mean that regardless of what happens on or just after NAB, price drops in PAL equipment isn't more likely than any other time of the year...?

So if i was looking to buy an HVX, and considering the p2 offer just expired, I might find a good discount at the show? I'll be there for the expo.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a price drop on the p2 - in fact I expect it, considering it's pure rip off at present prices. But I certainly see no reason why the HVX would have a price drop. Price drops occur when there's competition or more supply than demand. There is no competition for HVX in its class, and they are selling every one they manage to push out the door. The p2 is a different kettle of fish - there certainly can be competiton, and it's wildly overpriced right now.

I'm not looking for a price drop. I was resonding to:

The best deals are at NAB

If i could get an HVX AT NAB for under the normal $5200ish, i would make sure I had the cash to do it.

Does Pani US sell HW at NAM? Or are these sales by authorized dealers?

Thanks

NAB is not, typically, a show where people buy stuff. It's an exhibition, not a market. You can find some show specials sometimes; usually B&H will have an 8-page booklet of show specials, and sometimes software dealers will have show specials.

Last year there was a dealer selling HVXs for $5100 on the show floor, when everyone else in the country was pretty much stuck at $5300-$5400. But if you're planning on finding a lot of slashed prices everywhere you look, you'll probably end up disappointed; that's not really what the show's about.

I was speaking with a great guy who posts on here, and also sells vid camera's via his business... he mentioned that even though he wanted to sell me a hvx200 - that I should probably wait until after the NAB to see what happens... I'm taking his advice, but should this apply to canon xha1 also? For any reason would this camera's price drop?

Nab is over and no DVX100 replacement, I guess its time to get a Canon A1:cry:

There isn't much of a need for a replacement, but the price was lowered significantly.

I was hoping for another rebate. Around $2,000 sounds better. Maybe buy the end of the month. They increased the rebate last time after a few weeks.

$200 isnt much of a significant price drop

Another vote for $2K. I think anything more is just not going to work. At this point we've had the A1 from authorized dealers at $3K. I see a minimum of 1K difference between these cameras, rather than, say, a $500. I mean if they ask $2,500 for the DVX, who wouldn't pay another $500 to get the A1. Sorry, Panny, the DVX gotta hit $1,999.00 or else it's just not a deal. I think they can still make money at that price, and might even sop up some of the demand away from the A1 at that price point - but not above IMHO. Sure, some will continue to pay anything Panny asks for the DVX, but those are few and far between, seems to me.

Maybe they are just going to discontinue the DVX100.

OldCorpse

Maybe they will discontinue, though I'd have to ask why. They have no camera in this class. If they can make a profit at $2K, why not sell it for that price? After all, I doubt the availability of the DVX for 2K would take away any sales from their higher priced cameras. As long as they make money, it doesn't take away sales from their other cameras, and takes some market slice away from Canon/Sony, I don't see why they wouldn't do it. Of course, if the economic proposition isn't there (f.ex. servicing/sales are too much for the return), then yes, they'd shut it down. Without seeing their accounting, I wouldn't know one way or another. I just wish they'd wise up and drop the price to something realistic given market realities. Then again, maybe they've done a careful marketing study and the price as it is now works for them best. Who knows. It's our desires vs reality out there. All I can say, for me personally, anything over 2K for the DVX is just too high. YMMV.

$2000 for new. Maybe even $2100 or $2200. If SD is on the way out and Panasonic is invested in the P2 they might just let the DVX100 go, but they will have something to replace it. A DVX type camera with AVCHD. Most of us want 16:9 anyway.

A taped based cam with some type of media card is what we will probably see,,,when? Later this year? But if I could pick up a new DVX100b for $2000 I'd do it.

They're still selling plenty of DVXs. Maybe not as many as before, but it's doing just fine. MTV, Turner, lots of cable networks -- the DVX is quite entrenched in broadcast (which is, lest we forget, an almost exclusively standard-def 4:3 world).

There will undoubtedly be a follow-up, but they gave no indication as to when. And I would absolutely expect it to be HD. I don't think we'll ever see another SD camera from Panasonic Broadcast; that company is all about HD now.
