Hey I am just curious if I shoot in 720 24pn mode (4:2:2) and in-camera dump to the SD tape drive, does my color space go back to 4:1:1? I was hoping since I captured at 4:2:2 it would write the color space to tape. Yes or No?

The tape version would be downresed to 480i and 4:1:1 MiniDV color space.
If I am doing a standard def project and want the color space of DVCPROHD I generally just shoot in 720 24pn or 30pn so i can use all the variable speed features if I need to. I then take all my footage and use after effects to make SD copies of my footage in the same 4:2:2 color space. That way in your final edit you have the lush color of the original footage and export as an animation codec or something, or even DVCPRO50 which is 4:2:2 color but 420i.

I've done this plenty of times and if you play out of the camera via the HD component cable to Digi Beta or Beta SX your getting 4:2:2. Only if you're going to mini DV would have 4:1:1. FYI anything I have shot in 720/24P that I've put to Digi Beta looks surprisingly good, particularly when editing 1:1 in Avid via SDI. Of course you lose the original time code as you are in essence crash recording, so you have to take that into consideration. And of course you need to have one of these VTR's to be able to take advantage of the 4:2:2 recording. However, I have also had very good results taking the component signal to my DSR-2000. It holds up pretty well there too.

You could also do your standard def project in DVCPro 50 and keep the 4:2:2 color space.

Basically I don't need this project in HD and was worried I would run out of p2 space in the field, and have to dump to tape. I just returned from today's shoot with plenty of P2 space. 720 24pn is a great GREAT recording medium. Turns out I wont have to dump the footage to SD.

Just remember that if you change the framerate in 24pn or 30pn mode that the footage will record silent. When I first got the camera I accidentally shot a band in 30pn mode but recording at 24fps. I was able to put it in a 24p project and get it to play at regular speed and not be sped up, but adjusting fps records with no audio. Luckily there was some friends there with a local cable channel show recording 3 cameras and straight off the board for me to use for audio. If I hadnt had their audio to save my donkey I would have had to make an unsynched montage to some of their recorded songs instead of the live version.

So what's the secret of dumping to tape? The manual says once the clips are highlighted to press the two tiny round record buttons at same time. Nothing happens with mine.

The clip #'s need to be black, if the clip #'s are red then it won't record... You have to make sure that the shoot setting match the dub settings.
Not sure if explanation makes sense, it's in the manual--> I've had to look myself to figure it out.

The clips were black, the problem must have been settings not same as when shooting - just ran into that when trying to play back clips. Will try again - thanks for the tip.
