I have shot slo mo many times in the past. In the last two days, though, attempts to shoot 60FPS are not working. I have tried overcranking at 720pn24, 720 p24 and 720
p30. I put the camera in film mode and set the frame rate to 60 FPS. When played back in the camera or put on the time line, it is obviously normal speed. Sometimes I can slow it down in post but other times when I try it will not play back. When I can play it back it is not that smooth.

Funny thing is, under properties these files say 59.94 fps. What gives?

has to be 24pN to see it played back in the camera. Try again..

you can take that 60i footage and bring it into an NLE in a 24p or 30i timeline and it will be slow motion.

If the clip was shot at 60fps it just wont be slow motion when played back at 60fps

I've checked and re checked the settings in FCP. I'm playing back on a 720 24p
timeline and still getting normal speed.

Today I'm going out to shoot a competition of dogs catching frisbees and slo mo will be critical. Would it be safest to just shoot in 720 60P and slow it in post rather than using variable frame speed?

Make sure your recording set up menu is set to 720/24PN.
Then go to the scene file menu and change the #2 setting to 60 frames.
You will now get slo mo in camera.

If it is playing back at normal speed at 24fps you may have recorded it at 24fps and not at 60fps.

Yes you can do it either way. The key is that you must record at 60fps and play it back at 24fps

Both ways you are recording at 60fps and playing at 24fps.

Method 1: Recording in 24pn mode with frame rate set to 60fps. By changing the fps settings in 24pn mode to 60fps you are just making the camera mark that clip as 24p and playing those 60fps back at 24fps. (RECORDS SILENT unless you record at 24p)

Method 2: Recording in 60p mode you still record at 60fps and it will play back on the camera as 60fps because the clip knows its 60p. If you bring that into your NLE into a 24p project it will play back at 24fps. (RECORDS AUDIO)

The only difference between the 2 methods is that in method 1 you can shoot and then play it back in slow motion on the camera right away. In method 2 if you play it back right away on the camera it will be playing back at 60fps and not look slow motion.

Hope this helps.

Nice tip Arson ! 60fps at 60P as an option...

Slomo worked fine today - I must have accidentally set camera at 720p instead of Pn. Thanks for the replies!

Been there, done that, still have the marks from banging my head on the wall.

With FCP's Frame Rate Converter, you can in fact shoot VFR in regular non-Native 720p24.
