Hi.. I’ve had my HVX202EN (which is the Pal version I believe) for about 10mths and have been shooting a doco in 1080i.

I’ve used the 720i in both DV and DVCPro 50 formats and all good.

But I’m thinking of switching for a new shoot and use 720p… looks like it’s going to be mainly heads and shoulders…

Just asking around and seeing how other Pal users are finding the format… any issues with creating DVD’s… I’m not to sure about doing progressive one’s yet…

How’s the workflow with after effects etc… are you having any cross platforms issues… should I shoot strictly in 720PN mode and set to 25fps for audio…

Is there an issue using the 720PN mode for ramp footage and the standard 720p at other times…

Will do some test’s this weekend but thought I’d have a fish around the forum…

Cheers

Australia... as I said I'll do some tests today.. 1080i has been fantastic for me.. but trying something new and hoping to use a little less space on the cards.. I've got 2 x 8gigs...

There is no such thing as 720i. 720 is a progressive format only.
Also DV and DVCPro50 are 480 formats only.

Not in Pal land it's 720 x 576... cheers

Dear Lez - 720x576 is SD PAL. HD 720p is 1280x720 (960x720). My preferred format is 720/25p. Advantage: half the space on P2 and variable frame rates. From time to time I'm using 1080/25p but never 1080/50i.

How are you finding 720p when panning and zooming... and what's your workflow to DVD...

Sorry, in Pal land DV & DVCPro50 are 576 formats.
When you say you've used 720i in both DV and DVCPro50 what you are actually using is 576i NOT 720. There is no 720i, even in PAL.
The 720 format of the HVX202 is progressive only and it refers to the 2nd number of the format. ie. 1280 x 720. That format is High Definition.

Cool.. semantics aside... how are people finding the progressive modes when panning and zooming.. and are people making progessive dvd's or interlaced...

Cheers

Panning and zooming, huh. Well there was a war about this when the DVX started and was the only progressive DV camera. Some people hate it. Mostly people who never used film. You will have to use a new technique to make it look good. Progressive only has half the motion-information (only 25 full frames instead of 50 half frames). So you have to be careful. There are several rules that apply to shooting progressive (which are basically film-rules).
Search the DVX forums for "strobing".

To me: I shoot progressive since I got the DVX. I shoot nature, sports and events. I only use interlaced when I am in a multicamera shoot and all others are 50i. And I hate it. Once you understand progressive you never wanna switch to that "i" mode. Making a DVD is painless. Master your edit in 720p and then bring it into a standard-def timeline. Conversion is done automatically and the image will look great.

Thanks.. did some test's today with the kids playing soccer... lots of movement... the 50fps is very nice I must admit...

I imported into FCP and encoded a standard def mpeg from compressor (no fields) and looks pretty sweet..

Now if I reduce my shutter angle will the image sharpness increase like in a film shutter... or because we're using electronic shutters they'll be no difference... (I'll test but no harm in asking)

I'm trying to encode to H.264 and do the pseudo HD DVD trick but the encode times are horrendous...

What advantage is there in doing the conversion in a standard def timeline .. I imagine there’s a render involved… as opposed to doing the conversion in compressor or similar…

Think I might be converted on 720p where 1080 is not necessary…
