I have been hearing more and more that in the world of people making feature length films on the cheap or otherwise that HD is now the industry standard and films not shot on HD will no longer be even looked at .

If this is true does that mean my DVX 100A is pretty much obsolete?

Thanks.

I think that the whole HD thing is just really starting to come together, but it will take several more years to work its way into mainstream america.

Most people cannot afford expensive HD displays or blu ray players, so standard def 24p still has some good years to live.

Uh, whoever says that doesn't know what they're talking about. This has been discussed at length here

I just came from a film fest last weekend and they were projecting on a very big screen in a regular theatre and most things were shot in SD that were shown and not one of them looked bad. Well one of them did but that was because it was shot too dark, lucky the story was amazing and you forget about how dark it was. I was amazed on how nice the films looked because I have been to screenings at this place in Manhattan and the footage always looks like ass so I guess its the projector being used. The edges were sharp, the colors were beautiful and the sound was amazing at the Boston screening. I actually was pleased when my joint finally went. They also screened 35mm films in the same place so there was something to compare to.

So like Jade said, they don't know what they are talking about.

Is HD better? Sure. Is the DVX obsolete? The AMPAS doesn't seem to think so, since DVX-shot documentaries were nominated for Oscars two years in a row...

Thank you all very much for this great info. I am an actor and as I said , I own a DVX 100A. My intension is to shoot shorts and a feature.

I just finished acting in a feature (shot on film). During breaks I had conversations and also overheard many people on the crew as well as the producers and the director talking about this. They said that because the digital cameras are advancing so fast the industry is at a point where if you are marketing your film it won't be seriously considered if its not HD at the very least.

I trust the info you all mention and its a relief to know I don't have to sell my camera 'yet'.

As far as the format goes: if your film is good enough, it won't matter what format it was shot on. And if your film isn't good enough, it won't matter what format it was shot on.

But given their choice, distributors would of course prefer that everything be shot on 35mm or HD.
